NEWARK, N.J. (April 11, 2026) – Rutgers University-Camden junior
Sammie Friel hurled a pair of complete games here Saturday, but the Scarlet Raptors had to settle for a split in their New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader against Rutgers-Newark.
The Raptors won the opener, 2-1, behind Friel's four-hitter before losing her five-hit effort in the nightcap, 4-2.
The split leaves the Scarlet Raptors at 8-14 overall and 3-7 in the NJAC, while Newark stands at 5-21 overall and 1-9 in the NJAC.
The Scarlet Raptors host nationally-ranked Rowan University in a conference doubleheader Tuesday at 3 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden 2, Rutgers-Newark 1
Friel struck out 11, didn't walk any batters and allowed only one earned run in the sixth inning as she won the opening game.
Rutgers-Camden scored a run in the first inning after a leadoff single by junior shortstop
Ava Iepson. She moved to second on a ground out and to third on a single by junior second baseman
Giana Bauer. Junior third baseman
Alana Gannon followed with an RBI triple, scoring Iepson before Bauer was thrown out at home.
In the fifth inning, the Raptors scored the only other run Friel needed. Sophomore designated player
Zoie Mantzell walked, advanced on a ground out and scored on a double by junior center fielder
Kali Baker.
Iepson went 2-for-4 with one run scored to lead the seven-hit Rutgers-Camden attack.
Rutgers-Newark 4, Rutgers-Camden 2
The Scarlet Raiders broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Newark bunched three hits and a walk to score its runs in an inning sparked by a leadoff triple from senior right fielder Kayla Cardozo.
Rutgers-Camden, which had scored a third-inning run on a wild pitch, scored one run in the top of the seventh inning before Newark held on for its first NJAC win of the season. Gannon hit a leadoff triple in the seventh and scored on a wild pitch.
Iepson and Gannon both went 3-for-4 in the game, with Gannon scoring two runs. Bauer and Mantzell had two hits apiece.
Friel allowed only five hits in her six innings, while walking two and striking out six. She allowed four earned runs to leave her season record at 5-6. The two complete games hiked her season total to nine complete games.
