The NAIA District 19 and Area 7 champions, the Pioneers played in the NAIA National Soccer Tournament in Huntsville, Alabama, where they went 1-2 to finish sixth in the country. The team compiled an 11-6-1 record overall, with two of the losses coming in the national tournament and another coming against Howard University, a perennial Division I power which won the 1972 and 1974 national titles and finished ranked No. 11 in 1977. Richard Peters led the team in scoring (15 goals, six assists for 36 points), while John Ahrens played all 18 games in goal, posting six shutouts. Peters, Wordsworth George and Ruthven Williams earned All-District 19 Tournament Team honors. George, Williams, Winston Woodley and George Scafidi each earned Second Team All-NAIA District 31 honors.
          Members of the team included Ahrens, Peters, George, Williams, Woodley, Scafidi, Michael John, Darrell Spracklin, Alec Ross, Floyd Babb, Fran Regomentic, Keith Meola, John Lambert, Lou Jimenez, Bob Spracklin and Philip Martin. The team was coached by George Phillips. The assistant coach was Pierre LeBrun and the manager was Aneita Williams.
