Hall of Fame
Garland “Gar” Miller held the all-time baseball program record for victories for 45 seasons before it was broken in 2005. He posted a 17-12 record in four years at Rutgers College of South Jersey, and still holds the school mark with 19 complete games. He previously held the single-season mark with seven wins in 1960 (tied in 1969 and broken in 2002), and he still ranks high on the career list in innings pitched (third, 201), strikeouts (fourth, 169) and shutouts (tied for third with two). His 74 strikeouts in 1960 is the fourth-highest single-season mark in program history, and stood as a program record for eight years.
Miller also hurled a no-hitter May 1, 1959 against Lebanon Valley (a 4-0 win with two walks and 10 strikeouts). During his tenure, the baseball team was the Delaware Valley Conference tri-champions in 1957 and won the outright DVC title in 1959 and 1960, pretty impressive for a club which won only one game (1-11) the season before his class arrived.
Miller played a key role in that success, earning outright team MVP honors from his teammates as a sophomore and a senior, and being named co-MVP as a junior.
Miller also played basketball for four seasons, becoming a starter as a sophomore. During the 1959-60 campaign he helped his team capture its first DVC title.
Inducted into the Gloucester County Sports Hall of Fame in January, 2005, Miller was a multi-sport star at the old Swedesboro High School.
Miller received his Bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts in 1960. A former editor and communications manager at Atlantic Richfield Company, the Wenonah resident is a nationally-recognized sports memorabilia collector who wrote the hobby’s first “How to Collect” book.
