No. 2 Rutgers-Camden rallies to notch tie at TCNJ

Box Score

EWING, N.J. – The winning streak is over, but the undefeated run of the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team continues.

The Scarlet Raptors rallied with a goal late in the second half and went on to tie The College of New Jersey, 1-1 in double overtime, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.

The tie snaps the Scarlet Raptors' program-record 11-game winning streak, but hikes Rutgers-Camden's record to 11-0-1 overall and 3-0-1 in the NJAC. The team's unbeaten streak over two years improves to 24 games (20-0-4), tying with Johns Hopkins University (2005-2007) for 18th on the all-time NCAA Division III list for consecutive games without a loss.

For the Scarlet Raptors, who are ranked No. 2 in both the NSCAA poll and the D3soccer.com Top 25 rankings, it was a hard-fought battle in a place that always seems to give them trouble. Rutgers-Camden has gone 0-3-3 at TCNJ since its last road win over the Lions, a 2-1 victory on Sept. 24, 2003.

TCNJ stands at 7-2-2 overall and 2-1-1 in the conference after nearly knocking off a Top 25 team for the second straight game. The Lions stunned Montclair State University, 2-1, on Saturday when the Red Hawks were ranked fourth in the D3soccer.com poll and 17th by the NSCAA.

TCNJ leads the all-time series, 22-6-5, with the Raptors holding a 3-2-3 edge since losing to the Lions in the 2005 NJAC championship game. The Scarlet Raptors won last season's game, 2-0, in Camden.

The Lions took an early lead following a foul in the box midway through the first half. Senior midfielder Kevin Shaw (Brookside, NJ/West Morris Mendham) took a penalty kick and converted for his 13th goal of the season.

Rutgers-Camden was kept off the board until 73:12, when senior midfielder Stevan Austino (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) drilled home a left-footed shot after intercepting a clear just outside the box. It was Austino's fourth goal of the season.

Rutgers-Camden held an 18-14 edge in shots and a 5-3 margin in corner kicks. Raptor senior goalie Mike Randall (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made nine saves, while Lions senior Aaron Utman (Hopewell, NJ/Hopewell Valley) notched four saves.

The Scarlet Raptors are idle until Oct. 16, when they host Richard Stockton College in a 7 p.m. NJAC game.
