Lehman men outlast Rutgers-Camden

Box Score BRONX, N.Y. – Sophomore forward Jerrome Jones (Bronx, NY/Mount Vernon) had a double-double with 23 points and a game-high 17 rebounds to power the Lehman College men's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 75-67, in the Coaches vs. Cancer Basketball Classic here Sunday afternoon.

Lehman, which improves to 7-4, also received a game-high 25 points from junior guard Jonathan Greenfield (Hartford, CT/Windsor).

Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-7.

The Scarlet Raptors were forced to play catch-up throughout most of the first half. After trading baskets to start the game, the Lightning went on a nine-point run to open an 11-2 lead, holding the Scarlet Raptors scoreless for four minutes before junior guard/forward Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) notched a field goal and tacked on a free throw 5:02 into the half, cutting the cap to 11-5. Russell started an 8-2 Raptor run, which cut the deficit to 13-12.

Once again, Lehman went on a run to open up a 23-16 lead before the Raptors fought back with seven straight points, tying the game on a basket by freshman guard Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) with 3:49 left in the half. After Lehman regained the lead, sophomore guard Steven Schneider (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) nailed a trey to give the Raptors their first lead of the night, 26-25.

The teams settled for a 30-30 halftime score, with Russell notching nine first-half points and Schneider adding eight for the Scarlet Raptors. Jones had a game-high 13 points in the opening half.

The teams traded leads seven times early in the second half before Lehman took the lead for good, 45-43, on a three-point basket by senior guard Kelvin Gil (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Hayes). After the Raptors cut the gap to 45-44 on a foul shot by senior forward Robert Anders (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach), the Lightning struck for five straight points. The closest the Raptors came the rest of the way was three points, at both 50-47 and 52-49.

In addition to the 25 points by Greenfield and 23 by Jones, the Lightning received 13 points from Gil and 10 from sophomore guard/forward Stanley Stephens (New York, NY/Manhattan Central). Gil added a game-high six assists, while junior forward Kevan Proctor (Brooklyn, NY/Grand Street Campus) added 11 rebounds to go along with Jones' 17 boards. Proctor also blocked a game-high five shots.

Lehman held a 47-34 advantage off the boards and shot 42.4 percent (28-for-66) from the floor to the Scarlet Raptors' 39.1 (25-for-64).

Russell notched a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead Rutgers-Camden. It was his fifth double-double of the season and 16th of his career.

Schneider and junior guard/forward Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) both added 10 points for Rutgers-Camden, while Anders and sophomore guard/forward John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) scored nine points apiece.

Taylor and Smart both led the Raptors with three assists, while Taylor and freshman guard Tom Heim (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) shared game-high honors with three steals apiece.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action in the new year when it travels to Montclair State University Jan. 4 for a 1 p.m. New Jersey Athletic Conference game.
