Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – Offensive power has rarely been a concern for the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team, but now the Scarlet Raptors are finding new weapons in their arsenal.
Freshman
Juan Rojas (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) and sophomore transfer
Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep), a pair of midfielders, both scored their first Rutgers-Camden goal to power the Scarlet Raptors over Cabrini College, 2-0, in a non-conference game here Wednesday night.
Rutgers-Camden, ranked No. 18 in the NSCAA Division III poll, improves to 3-0 overall and is 12-0-3 in its last 15 games dating back to last season.
The Cavaliers fall to 0-1-2, including 0-1-1 against Top 20 programs Rutgers-Camden and Scranton.
The Scarlet Raptors out-shot the Cavaliers, 27-7, in the game and 13-4 in the opening half, but the game was scoreless until Rojas tucked a shot inside the right post following a flurry of activity in the goal mouth. Rojas scored his first career goal, and first game-winning goal, with 6:25 remaining in the first half.
The Scarlet Raptors, who had several good scoring opportunities in the game, including a first-half shot by Hurff off the crossbar, finally added an insurance goal late in the game. Sophomore forward
Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), an All-American as a freshman who scored four goals in the Raptors' first two games this season, was sprung loose on a breakaway late in the game, forcing Cabrini senior goalie
Eric Nowicki (Havre de Grace, MD/John Carroll School) out of the net to break up the play. The ball fell onto the feet of a charging Hurff, who found the open net for his first goal at Rutgers-Camden since transferring from the Division I Rutgers campus in New Brunswick.
In addition to its big advantage in shots, Rutgers-Camden also held an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden senior goalie
Mike Randall (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) made two saves to record his 20th career victory, moving into fourth on the program's all-time list. It was his 10th career shutout and first this season.
Randall received plenty of support from a solid back four anchored by senior starters
Taylor McGrory (Collingswood, NJ/Sterling), Bobby Foster (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) and
Matt Macey (Bridgeton, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and sophomore
Ray El-Khoury (Cranford, NJ/Cranford). Nowicki had five shots for the Cavaliers, who also blocked several Rutgers-Camden shots in the box.
The Cavaliers will host the Eagle Road Classic this weekend, playing Lebanon Valley College at 4 p.m. Friday and Alvernia University at 2:30 p.m. Saturday.
The Scarlet Raptors will host their own tournament on Saturday and Sunday with the 13th annual Cialella Soccer Classic. They play each day at 4:30 p.m. against Eastern Mennonite University and Arcadia University, respectively.
