Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The William Paterson University men's basketball team went on a 20-8 run to open the second half and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 83-60, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The Pioneers improve to 12-3 overall and 7-2 in the NJAC with their seventh win in eight games.
The Scarlet Raptors fall to 3-13 overall and 1-8 in the NJAC.
William Paterson leads the all-time series with Rutgers-Camden, 51-6, and has won the last five games, 16 of the last 17 and 44 of the last 46.
Senior guard
Javae King-Gilchrist (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) scored a game-high 25 points, including 14 in the second half when the Pioneers broke open a tight 33-29 halftime lead. He also added a game-high five assists.
Sophomore guard
Bright Mensah (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) notched 17 points for the winners, while adding seven rebounds.
Junior guard
Sandy Burgos (Fort Lee, NJ/Fort Lee), who entered the game with a slight lead over King-Gilchrist for the top scoring average in the NJAC (22.7-20.7), added 16 points as the Pioneers placed four players in double figures. Junior guard
Jaques Conceicao (Massama-Lisboa, Portugal/Francais Charle Lepierre) collected 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Pioneers.
For the Scarlet Raptors, sophomore guard
John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) scored a career-high 22 points on 9-for-13 shooting from the floor and 4-for-5 shooting from the foul line. Tatem, whose previous high was 19 points against Eastern University Dec. 16, also added eight rebounds.
Junior guard/forward
Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) produced 15 points for the Raptors, while junior guard/forward
Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) canned 14.
Senior forward
Robert Anders (Vero Beach, FL/Vero Beach) hauled down a game-high 12 rebounds, which set his new Scarlet Raptor career high. His previous high of 10 came against Rowan University Nov. 28, 2012.
Junior guard
Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ/Winslow Township), meanwhile, tied his career high with a game-high five steals. He had collected five steals on two prior occasions, with the last coming against The College of New Jersey Jan. 30, 2013.
William Paterson shot 44.6 percent (29-for-65) from the floor, including 10-for-25 (40.0) from three-point range. The Pioneers also hit 15 of their 17 free throws (88.2) and forced 20 Scarlet Raptor turnovers.
Rutgers-Camden, which shot 38.3 percent (23-for-60) from the floor and 12-for-19 (63.2) from the foul line, held a slim 39-38 advantage off the boards.
William Paterson University plays a 2 p.m. non-conference game at John Jay College of Criminal Justice on Monday.
Rutgers-Camden returns to play Wednesday at 8 p.m. with a NJAC game at Rutgers-Newark.
