John Snow (Newark, NJ/Montclair Kimberley) collected a game-high 26 points to power the Rutgers-Newark men's basketball team over Rutgers-Camden, 77-62, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference men's basketball game here Monday afternoon.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the NJAC, while the Scarlet Raptors fall to 2-9 overall and 1-4 in conference play.
The teams traded leads eight times early in the contest before the Scarlet Raiders took the lead for good, 13-12, on a jumper by Snow with 9:19 remaining in the half. His shot triggered an eight-point run, capped by his three-point field goal, to help the Scarlet Raiders build a 20-12 advantage. The closest the Scarlet Raptors came the rest of the way was 24-21, as the Raiders built a 36-24 halftime lead.
Snow, who entered the game with a team-leading 16.5 scoring average, shot 7-for-10 from the floor, including 3-for-3 from three-point range, on his way to 26 points. He was 9-for-11 from the foul line.
Junior guard/forward
Christian Garcia (Freehold, NJ/Freehold) added 14 points, seven rebounds and a game-high five assists for the Scarlet Raiders. Garcia, whose team-high rebounding total helped Newark control the boards, 33-26, also tied for game-high honors with four steals.
The Scarlet Raiders shot 25-for-42 (59.5 percent) for the game, including 6-for-10 from three-point range. Rutgers-Camden shot 21-for-55 (38.2) from the floor and only 2-for-12 (16.7) from beyond the arc.
The Scarlet Raptors received 18 points from freshman guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), who shot 7-for-11 from the floor and 4-for-8 from the foul line. He also added a team-high four assists.
Junior guard/forward
Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) added 14 points.
Sophomore guard/forward
John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Raptors. He also added three steals.
Rutgers-Camden junior guard
Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ/Winslow Township) tied Garcia for game-high honors with four steals.
Both teams return to NJAC action with 8 p.m. games Wednesday. Rutgers-Newark hosts Ramapo College, while Rutgers-Camden travels to Richard Stockton College.
