Box Score GLASSBORO, N.J. – With one late, decisive strike here Wednesday night, Rowan University freshman forward
Travis Ward (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) not only ended the Profs' recent losing streak at the hands of Rutgers University-Camden, but he also snapped the Scarlet Raptors' 19-game undefeated string in New Jersey Athletic Conference play.
Ward scored with one minute remaining in regulation, assisted by sophomore midfielder
Vinny Ignatowitz (Toms River, NJ/Toms River South) as the Profs edged the Scarlet Raptors, 1-0.
The victory lifts Rowan to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC, snapping Rutgers-Camden's six-game winning streak against Rowan. It was the Profs' first win over the Scarlet Raptors since a 2-1 victory in Camden on October 28, 2009.
Rowan leads the all-time series, 36-10-3.
The loss snapped Rutgers-Camden's two-game winning streak and dropped the three-time defending NJAC champions to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference. It was their first loss to a conference team, including the NJAC playoffs, since a 4-3 overtime loss at Montclair State University on Sept. 29, 2012. They had gone 16-0-3 against conference foes since that game.
Rutgers-Camden held a 16-15 edge in shots, while Rowan had a 7-2 margin in corner kicks. In the second half, however, the Profs had a 12-7 margin in shots. Ward made the only one that counted when he took a cross into the box from Kim with time winding down in the scoreless game. His shot from the left side found the net.
Junior goalie
Graeham Gotrell (Hackensack, NJ/Hackensack) made five saves and the Profs also had a backsave to complete the shutout. Rutgers-Camden sophomore keeper
Eric Bumbera (Wall, NJ/Wall) made six saves.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action Saturday, hosting Kean University in a 1 p.m. NJAC game.
