Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – Sophomore goalie
Angela Martorano (Gloucester Township, NJ/Triton Regional) collected her first career win and shutout in her second career start to power the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team over Ramapo College, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday afternoon.
The victory lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 5-7-1 overall and 2-3 in the NJAC, while the Roadrunners fall to 3-7-2 and 1-4. It also helped Rutgers-Camden snap a two-game losing streak in the all-time series and improve its series lead to 8-6-2.
Martorano played a huge role in the victory, making seven saves, including a pair of spectacular saves in a scoreless first half. With 11:53 remaining in the half, she batted a shot by the Roadrunners'
Nicole Ninomiya (Branchburg, NJ/Somerville) over the crossbar to preserve the shutout. In the last minute of the half, she charged to the top of the box to save a 1-on-1 breakaway against Ramapo's
Alexus Fuentes (Woodbridge, NJ/Woodbridge). Early in the second half, it was Ramapo freshman keeper
Jessica Cusick (Wayne, NJ/Wayne Valley) who kept the game scoreless with a fine save against Scarlet Raptor sophomore forward
Catherine Fiore (Oaklyn, NJ/Paul VI). Fiore, however, got even in the 59th minute when she scored the game's only goal. After Raptor junior midfielder
Molly Felici (Mantua, NJ/Clearview Regional) lofted the ball into the box, it banged around as a host of Roadrunners tried to clear it. The ball finally landed on Fiore's feet at the doorstep, and she tapped in a shot off Cusick for her team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Cusick finished with eight saves for the Roadrunners. Martorano, meanwhile, controlled the box for the Scarlet Raptors, while making her seven saves. She lowered her goals-against average to 0.73 on the season and raised her save percentage to .905.
Both teams collected 17 shots, while Rutgers-Camden held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday in a 7:30 p.m. NJAC road game. The Scarlet Raptors play at The College of New Jersey, which is ranked No. 17 in this week's NSCAA Division III Top 25 and No. 12 in the
