Box Score STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team weathered a brutal wind in its face while defending during the first half of Wednesday's game at the College of Staten Island.
In the second half, playing with the wind, the Scarlet Raptors collected a pair of goals and went on to defeat the Dolphins, 2-0, in a wet and windy non-conference game.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 6-9-1, snapping a two-game losing streak, while the Dolphins fall to 6-7-2. They are 0-3-2 against teams from the New Jersey Athletic Conference.
Rutgers-Camden leads the all-time series, 2-0, with the only other game played in Camden on Oct. 22, 2007. The Raptors won that contest, 3-0.
Playing into the teeth of a fierce wind, the Scarlet Raptors still managed to keep the Dolphins off the scoreboard in the opening half, while holding a 9-7 advantage in shots. On the wet, windy field, the Raptors had several scoring opportunities, including a shot off the crossbar, before the Dolphins had some chances late in the half.
Once the teams switched directions for the second half, the Scarlet Raptors' pressure finally paid off at 57:17. Sophomore forward
Catherine Fiore (Oaklyn, NJ/Paul VI) slipped behind the Staten Island defense and went one-on-one with Dolphins senior goalie
Victoria Donegan (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). Fiore finished off her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Later in the half, freshman midfielder
Amber Cobb (Mullica, NJ/Cedar Creek) notched her first career goal with a shot off Donegan's fingers at 66:10.
For the game, the Scarlet Raptors held an 18-12 advantage in shots and a 4-1 lead in corner kicks.

Angela Martorano (Gloucester Township, NJ/Triton Regional) made six saves to notch her second career victory and second shutout. Donegan had nine saves in goal for the College of Staten Island.
The Scarlet Raptors return to New Jersey Athletic Conference action Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. game at Rutgers-Newark, needing a victory to remain in the hunt for a NJAC playoff berth.
