Box Score UNION, N.J. – The Kean University women's soccer team managed one first-half goal and that was enough to edge Rutgers University-Camden, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Saturday night.
Kean, which was ranked as high as No. 17 nationally by
D3soccer.com on Sept. 16, improves to 8-4 overall and 2-3 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-7-1 overall and 1-3 in the conference.
Kean leads the all-time series, 12-2-3, including shutout wins in the last four meetings and a 7-0-1 mark since the Scarlet Raptors' last win in 2006 (a 2-1 road victory on Sept. 23).
Kean scored its lone goal at 35:19 on a long, high shot by junior
Emily Martinelli (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), assisted by freshman
Bridget Parise (Easton, PA/Bethlehem Catholic). Kean held a 7-4 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks in the first half, and 15-10 and 5-3 margins in the game. Rutgers-Camden put more shots on goal, 6-4.
For the Scarlet Raptors, sophomore
Angela Martorano (Gloucester Township, NJ/Triton Regional) made her first career start in goal, finishing with three saves.
Kean junior
KC Nunez (Fair Lawn, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy) made six saves in earning the shutout.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Catholic University of America.
