Daniel Waynick (East Windsor, NJ/Hightstown) collected a double-double of 18 points and a game-high 11 rebounds and junior forward
Ike Robinson (Trenton, NJ/Conwell-Egan Catholic, PA) scored a team-high 22 points to lead the Rowan University men's basketball team over Rutgers University-Camden, 82-66, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
The Profs improve to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the NJAC, while Rutgers-Camden falls to 3-2 and 1-2. Rowan has won the last two games against Rutgers-Camden and holds an 89-30 lead in the all-time series.
After three lead changes and two ties early in the first half, the Profs went on a five-point run to take a 13-8 advantage. Robinson sparked the run with a layup and a free throw.
Rutgers-Camden fought back to cut the gap to 13-12 before the Profs went on a nine-point run to take the first of their two 10-point leads in the opening half. Waynick hit back-to-back field goals in the stretch, which was capped by a three-pointer from sophomore guard
Josh Borrelli (Medford, NJ/Shawnee). At halftime, the Profs held a 36-29 lead, sparked by 11 points from Robinson. Sophomore center
Matt O'Keefe (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI) had eight points for Rutgers-Camden at the break, while junior guard
Julian Martin (Williamstown, NJ/Williamstown) added six.
After the Scarlet Raptors' senior guard
Wyatt Polk (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) scored the first two points of the second half, Rowan went on a seven-point run to increase the gap to 43-31. The Raptors managed to cut their deficit below double digits only twice after that, by eight-point margins of 61-53 and 63-55. Rowan's biggest lead, of 19 points, came at 82-63.
In addition to 22 points from Robinson and Waynick's double-double, the Profs received 16 points from senior forward
Mike Simpson (Sicklerville, NJ/Winslow Township). Polk paced the Scarlet Raptors with a game-high 26 points, 22 of them in the second half. He also added 10 rebounds for his first double-double at Rutgers-Camden since transferring from Caldwell College for his senior season.
O'Keefe and Martin finished with nine points apiece. O'Keefe tied his career scoring high, accomplished twice previously, and also added a career-high two assists.
Sophomore guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) scored eight points for the Raptors.
The Scarlet Raptors shot only 19-for-64 (29.7 percent) from the floor, including 1-for-12 (8.3) from three-point range. The Profs were 30-for-62 (48.4) from the floor and held a 49-35 advantage off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday when it hosts Kean University in a 2 p.m. NJAC game.
