Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's basketball team went on a 12-point run midway through the second half, turning a five-point deficit into a seven-point lead, and the Gothic Knights held on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 71-68, in the final regular-season game of the year for both New Jersey Athletic Conference opponents.
The Gothic Knights 14-11, 9-9, move into the NJAC playoffs, beginning with a quarterfinal game Saturday at Kean University.
The Scarlet Raptors close their season with a record of 4-21 overall and 2-16 in the NJAC.
NJCU has won 18 straight games against Rutgers-Camden and 46 of the last 47. The Gothic Knights lead the all-time series, 56-4.
Prior to the game, the Scarlet Raptors honored senior forward
Robert Anders (Vero Beach, NJ/Vero Beach), a two-year letterman at Rutgers-Camden after earning two letters at Gloucester County College.
Anders and the Scarlet Raptors were locked in a tight game that saw nine ties and 11 lead changes. After NJCU build a 36-32 advantage at halftime, aided by 12 points from junior guard
Jourdan Roberson (Brooklyn, NY/University), Rutgers-Camden went on an 18-9 run to open the second half and take a 50-45 lead with 11:58 remaining. NJCU answered with 12 straight points to take the lead for good. The Gothic Knights surged ahead 51-50 on a layup by sophomore guard
Khalid Muhammad (Orange, NJ/Orange), who had six of the 12 points in the run.
Rutgers-Camden managed to cut the deficit to 57-54 with 7:26 remaining before Roberson canned a huge three-pointer to start an 8-1 run. The Gothic Knights pushed their lead to 12 points with 3:47 remaining (69-57) and led, 71-63 entering the last minute before the Raptors got a three-pointer and a layup by junior guard/forwards
Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson) and
Alex Smart (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek), respectively, in the last 15 seconds to cut the final gap to three.
Senior forward
Walik Albright (Jersey City, NJ/Create Charter) and Roberson paced the Gothic Knights with 17 points apiece, while Khalid Muhammad canned 13 and senior guard
Jahmill Jenkins (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) added 10.
Albright paced NJCU with seven rebounds as the Gothic Knights held a 29-28 edge off the boards. NJCU shot 26-for-51 (51.0 percent) from the floor, while Rutgers-Camden was 24-for-49 (49.0).
Albright also added five steals as he helped his team force 23 Raptor turnovers.
Sophomore guard/forward
John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) collected 20 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while Russell added 18 and Smart canned 16. Anders, in his 46th and final game at Rutgers-Camden, grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
Junior guard
Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ/Winslow Township) tied Albright for game-high honors with five steals as the Raptors forced 25 NJCU turnovers.
