Western Connecticut edges Raptors in bottom of seventh

Box Score
CLERMONT, Fla. – The Western Connecticut State University softball team rallied from an early three-run deficit and pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning on an error to beat Rutgers University-Camden, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Dot Richardson Spring Games.

The Scarlet Raptors, who had posted a 10-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine in their first game on Sunday, fall to 4-2.

The Colonials improve to 4-3 with their third straight win.

With the score tied at 3-3, Western Connecticut's junior third baseman Nina Wojtkiewicz (Griswold, CT/Griswold) opened the bottom of the seventh with a triple to right field. She held on third base when sophomore leftfielder Maegan Rodriguez (East Haven, CT/Sacred Heart Academy) reached on a fielder's choice, a grounder to third that the Raptors didn't risk throwing with Wojtkiewicz representing the tying run at third. Sophomore catcher Erin Weber (Rocky Hill, CT/Rocky Hill) followed with a popup that fell in fair territory between third base and the plate for a single, loading the bases. An infield error on a grounder hit by junior first baseman Julia Bocek (Southington, CT/Southington) plated the winning run.
Krystine Rice
The run gave the victory to the Colonials' sophomore Alle Sabith (Meriden, CT/Maloney), who entered the game in the fifth inning and threw three scoreless frames to raise her record to 3-2. She allowed one hit and one walk, while striking out three.

Sophomore Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) was the tough-luck losing pitcher, suffering her first loss in four decisions. She worked six-plus innings, allowing nine hits and four runs, only two earned. She struck out three and didn't walk a batter.
Lindsay Day

The game started out well for the Raptors, who scored three runs in the top of the first inning off of Western Connecticut starter Emily Cintorino (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central). Three walks loaded the bases with one out before junior shortstop Krystine Rice (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) delivered a RBI single. Freshman first baseman Jessea Macaluso (Charlotte, NC/Allentown) plated another run with a fielder's choice and sophomore centerfielder Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) capped the frame with another run-scoring single.

The Colonials got one run back in the bottom of the first on a two-out double by Weber and an RBI single by Bocek. It was the first earned run allowed this season by Scott, snapping a string of 20-2/3 innings without an earned run.

Western Connecticut tied the game in the fourth on two hits, a passed ball and an error. Senior second baseman Jessica Caturano (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) doubled home the first run and scored the tying run on the two-out error.

The Raptors collected five hits off of the two WCSU pitchers, with nobody notching multiple hits.

For the Colonials, Weber, Bocek and sophomore rightfielder Michaela Roche (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) each collected two hits.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday at the Dot Richardson Spring Games, facing McDaniel College at 5 p.m. and St. Norbert College at 7 p.m.
