No. 2 Raptors drop opener against No. 10 F&M

Juan Rojas, seen working against Loras College in the national semifinals last season, had the Scarlet Raptors' lone shot on goal in their season opener
Box Score YORK, Penn. – During their magical run to the NCAA Division III championship game in 2013, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team went undefeated through its first 25 games before finally dropping a 2-1 double-overtime decision in the national final.

The Scarlet Raptors' first loss of 2014 came a lot sooner, as they dropped their opener, 1-0, against Franklin and Marshall College here Friday in the season opener for a pair of nationally-ranked programs. The Scarlet Raptors entered the game No. 2 in the pre-season NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll, while the Diplomats were No. 10.

The only goal of the game came at 29:43 when F&M senior forward Jared Bomba (Newmanstown, PA/Eastern Lebanon County) beat a defender and hit a pass into the box. Senior midfielder Max Watson (New York, NY/Poly Prep Country Day) one-timed a shot into the net to finish the play.

The Raptors nearly tied the game a little over two minutes later, but a shot by freshman midfielder Feli Csombok (South River, NJ/South River) hit off the crossbar. Late in the game the Raptors also nearly notched the equalizer, but barely missed connecting with a cross at the right post.

The Diplomats out-shot the Scarlet Raptors, 16-6, forcing Rutgers-Camden sophomore goalie Eric Bumbera (Wall, NJ/Wall) to make seven saves. Bumbera had five saves in the opening half, when the Diplomats held an 11-4 advantage in shots.

Franklin and Marshall junior keeper Trevor Britton (Owings Mills, MD/McDonogh School) didn't need to make a save until the last few seconds of the contest, when he stopped a shot by Raptor sophomore midfielder Juan Rojas (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway).

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday at 2 p.m. with another tough game. The Raptors play Virginia Wesleyan College in another neutral-site game, this time at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster, Penn. The Marlins received votes toward the NSCAA pre-season Top 25 poll.
