Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – Back in October of 2011, the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team went down to Virginia and posted a 1-0 victory over Lynchburg College, which was coming off a magical trip to the 2010 NCAA Division III finals.
The Hornets returned the favor, and then some, on a rainy Saturday afternoon in Camden.
Lynchburg received a late first-half goal from sophomore forward
Ben Grossfuss (Sanford, NC/Lee County) and went on to blank last season's NCAA Div. III runner-up team, Rutgers-Camden, 3-0.
The victory lifts the Hornets to 3-2. Rutgers-Camden, which is ranked No. 25 in the NSCAA Division III Top 25 and No. 23 in the
D3soccer.com poll, falls to 4-3.
The loss was the Raptors' first home defeat since a 1-0 shutout against Rutgers-Newark on Sept. 15, 2002. Since then, Rutgers-Camden had gone 24-0-1 at home. The loss also was the Scarlet Raptors' biggest margin of defeat at home since a 5-0 loss to New Jersey City University on Sept. 24, 2005. Overall, it was Rutgers-Camden's largest margin of defeat since another 3-0 loss, this one at Ramapo College, on Oct. 23, 2010.
Lynchburg came out strong, pressuring the Rutgers-Camden defense from the start, before the Scarlet Raptors finally turned the tide. Yet despite the flow of play, it was the Hornets who broke the scoring ice with 5:27 remaining in the half after Grossfuss collected a ball 25 yards out from goal and curved a shot into the left panel.
Rutgers-Camden held a 9-6 advantage in shots in the first half and a 3-0 lead in corner kicks. The Raptors out-shot the Hornets, 20-14, for the game and had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, but Lynchburg junior goalie
Scott Zaring (Forest, VA/Jefferson Forest) made five saves to earn the shutout. He also was helped by the left post only 14:40 into the second half, as Raptor junior midfielder
Grant Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) ripped a potential game-tying shot off the top of the post.
Less than 10 minutes later, the Hornets notched a huge insurance goal when senior midfielder
David Yates (Warrenton, VA/Fauquier) scored at 67:25 from a crowd in front of the net.
Sophomore forward
Brandon Webster (Woodbridge, VA/Hylton) scored the final goal with 11:19 remaining, deflecting in a perfect cross across the goal mouth from the right side by freshman forward
Collin Kashmer (Halifax, VA/Halifax County).Rutgers-Camden freshman goalie
Sean Matias (Vineland, NJ/Millville), making his first career start, made three saves.
The Scarlet Raptors are idle until Sept. 20, when they play a 7 p.m. game at nationally-ranked Christopher Newport University. The Captains, 4-1, are currently ranked No. 6 in the NSCAA poll and No. 14 in the
D3soccer.com rankings. Their only loss came against No. 4 Trinity (Texas) Friday night.
Lynchburg College hosts Hampden-Sydney College at 8 p.m. Wednesday.
