Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's basketball team answered a 10-point Rutgers-Camden run to start the second half with a 22-8 run of its own and went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 66-58, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
The Gothic Knights improve to 4-10 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC with their 19th consecutive victory over Rutgers-Camden and 47th victory in the series' last 48 games. They lead the overall series, 57-4.
The Scarlet Raptors fall to 8-7 overall and 2-6 in the NJAC.
Trailing, 26-24, at the half, the Scarlet Raptors opened the second half with 10 straight points, six of them by senior guard/forward
Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson). That gave Rutgers-Camden a 34-26 lead. The Raptors opened their margin to 10 points (38-28 and 40-30) before the Gothic Knights roared back quickly.
An 18-2 run suddenly left NJCU with a 48-42 lead with 8:17 remaining. That run included four three-pointers, including two by senior guard
Jamall McDaniel (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) and one apiece from senior guard
Justin Harte (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) and senior forward
Neville Joseph (Newark, NJ/West Side). Joseph's trey, with 9:07 remaining in the game, gave NJCU the lead for good, 45-42.
New Jersey City built its margin to as many as 10 points, 60-50, before posting its eight-point victory to snap a two-game losing streak.
Joseph finished with a game-high 23 points for the Gothic Knights, while McDaniel added 15 points and three steals. Senior guard
Jourdan Roberson (Brooklyn, NY/University) added four assists.
Russell notched 22 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while sophomore guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) added 11. Junior guard
John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) grabbed a game-high six rebounds for the Raptors, who held a 32-27 edge off the boards.
NJCU shot 22-for-44 (50.0 percent) from the floor, including 8-for-21 (38.1) from three-point range. Rutgers-Camden was 22-for-48 (45.8) from the floor and missed all 14 of its three-point attempts. The Raptors also had 23 turnovers to the Gothic Knights' 19.
The contest also marked the 90th career game for senior guard
Jason Richardson (Cedarbrook, NJ/Winslow Township), making him only the 13th player in program history to reach that milestone. He collected three steals to move his career total to 158, passing Marvin Young (157 steals, 1977-81) for third place on the program's career list.
Both teams return to action with NJAC games on Saturday. Rutgers-Camden plays a 3 p.m. contest at Ramapo College, while NJCU hosts Montclair State University at 4 p.m.
