Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2015) – Losses on their home pitch are a very rare occurrence for the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team, but Haverford College hasn't been paying attention to the stats on their last two visits to Rutgers-Camden Community Park.
For the second season in a row, the Fords handed the Scarlet Raptors a home defeat here Wednesday night as Haverford scored a first-half goal on a 25-yard rocket by senior forward
Sam Yarosh (West Chester, PA/Unionville) and went on to defeat Rutgers-Camden, 3-0, in a non-conference game.
Haverford improves to 8-3 with its sixth straight victory, and second straight over a ranked team after defeating No. 19 Gettysburg College Saturday. The Fords have posted five shutouts in that span.
Rutgers-Camden, ranked No. 18 in the
D3soccer.com Top 25, falls to 8-3-1.
The loss was the Raptors' first at home since a 7-3 defeat against Haverford on October 6, 2014. Rutgers-Camden, since winning its last four home games in 2010, has posted a phenomenal 57-4-3 mark at home, with two of the losses coming against the Fords. Between those two losses, the Scarlet Raptors were 13-0-1 at home.
Haverford broke the scoreless deadlock at 13:09 when freshman midfielder
Michael Carr (Wynnewood, PA/Saint Joe's Prep) crossed to Yarosh in the center of the field, about 25 yards out from the goal. Yarosh unleashed a bullet into the upper left side of the goal for his team-leading 10th goal of the season.
The Scarlet Raptors had several chances to tie the contest late in the game, including a shot by freshman
Vincenzo Masitti (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) off the crossbar in the 34th minute, and held a 9-5 advantage in shots and a 1-0 edge in corner kicks at the break.
Haverford, however, came on strong in the second half with leads of 10-4 in shots and 12-4 in corner kicks. It was those corner kicks, mostly by junior midfielder
Will Corkery (Needham, MA/Needham), that proved dangerous. At 50:42, junior back
Maclyn Willigan (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) headed home a Corkery kick inside the left post for his second goal of the season. The Fords added their third goal at 64:40 on a header at the far right post by sophomore midfielder
Russell Nicholson (Titusville, NJ/Hopewell Valley), off a Corkery corner kick.
Raptor freshman goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) made four saves and kept busy with plenty of traffic around the box. Haverford junior keeper
Sam Miller (Mercer Island, WA/Mercer Island) had five saves in 83:15 and combined with freshman
Chris Gibson (Norfolk, MA/Noble and Greenough School) for the shutout. Gibson played the final 6:45 without a save.
The Scarlet Raptors return to New Jersey Athletic Conference action Saturday when they host Ramapo College at 1 p.m. Haverford hosts Dickinson College Saturday at 2 p.m.
