Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Rutgers University-Camden softball team ended its spring break with a history-making performance.
Freshmen
Samantha Sandridge (Friendswood, TX/Friendswood) and
Brittany Striewski (Lindenwold, NJ/Paul VI) combined on the 22nd no-hitter in program history and the Scarlet Raptors ripped a club-record 22 hits as they trounced York (NY) College, 24-1, in five innings in their final game at the Fastpitch Dreams Spring Classic.
Earlier in the day, the Raptors rode the six-hit shutout pitching of junior
Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional) to a 3-0 victory over Frostburg State College.
The Scarlet Raptors, who have won four straight and five of their last six games, close their spring break trip with a 6-3 record. They open their home season Wednesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader against Penn State-Abington.
Rutgers-Camden 3, Frostburg State 0
Scott raised her record to 4-2 as she walked four and struck out four in her six-hitter. She out-dueled Frostburg sophomore
Hannah Tavik (Glen Burnie, MD/Seton Keough), who allowed 10 hits, three walks and three earned runs. Tavik (4-2) struck out five.
Rutgers-Camden broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning on a two-run double by junior third baseman
Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran), who continued her torrid hitting down south. Larson finished the day hitting .552 on the season as she went 6-for-7 with two runs and six RBIs in the doubleheader, giving her three-hit games in each of her last four contests.
The Raptors tacked on an insurance run in the sixth on a double steal with freshman second baseman
Taylor Nichols (Barrington, NJ/Haddon Heights) and sophomore right fielder
Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland), with Garcia swiping home.
Rutgers-Camden 24, York (NY) 1 (5 innings)
Sandridge (2-1) and Striewski pitched the program's first no-hitter since Scott had a no-no in a 6-0 victory over John Jay College on March 11, 2014. Sandridge worked the first three innings of the abbreviated game, which was stopped in the fifth inning by the mercy rule. She allowed one unearned run in the first inning, walked three and struck out four. Striewski walked one and struck out two in the final two innings of work.
The no-hitter was the 22nd in program history. Seven of them – including two perfect games – were authored by current Scarlet Raptor Head Coach
Michelle Schlichtig, a two-time First Team All-American in 2005 and 2006.
Offensively, the Raptors drilled 22 hits, breaking the old program mark of 21 set against Livingston College on April 13, 1982. They also had 33 total bases, the second-highest single-game mark in program history, including eight by senior shortstop
Krystine Rice (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee), who went 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, three runs and two RBIs.
Junior center fielder
Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) had six total bases, going 3-for-4 with a double, a triple, four runs and four RBIs, Scott and Larson also added three hits and four RBIs, while Nichols was 3-for-5 with three runs, two RBIs and two stolen bases.
