Box Score CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 16, 2015) – Senior co-captains
Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) and
Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) teamed up on the lone goal of the game midway through the first overtime period here Wednesday night to lead the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team over Cabrini College, 1-0.
The result leaves both teams with a 4-1-1 record in the early season.
In a tight affair in which each team had shots to break the scoreless deadlock, Cabrini held a 7-4 edge in shots in the first half before Rutgers-Camden came on with a 15-6 advantage in the second half and a 2-1 edge in overtime.
The Raptors finally dented the scoreboard with the winning tally 4:30 into the first overtime period. At the baseline to the right of the goal, Ryan ripped a cross into the goal mouth that caromed off a Cavalier defender and settled near the feet of Hurff, who finished his fourth goal of the season. It was his team-leading second game-winning goal.
Ryan and senior midfielder
Grant Taylor (Mendham, NJ/West Morris-Mendham) had near-misses for the Scarlet Raptors in the opening half, sailing shots barely over the crossbar. Cabrini, meanwhile, nearly scored midway through the first half when freshman
Jared Irwin (Wildwood, NJ/Wildwood) angled a shot from the left side that barely missed tucking inside the right post.
In the second half, an apparent goal by Ryan was nullified by an offside call.
Sophomore
Drew Slater (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) played the first half of the game for the Scarlet Raptors, making three saves. Rutgers-Camden freshman goalkeeper
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra), who was named the New Jersey Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, played the second half and overtime, making three saves to earn the victory. His biggest save came in a one-on-one with Cabrini junior
AJ Bishop (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) early in the overtime period, moments before the Raptors notched the winning goal.
Cabrini junior keeper
CJ Serratore (Ambler, PA/Archbishop Wood) made 11 saves.
Cabrini returns to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. home game against Alvernia University. Rutgers-Camden plays a 6 p.m. contest the same day when it begins its NJAC schedule at William Paterson University.
