Lauren Celona...first Raptor assist The tie snapped the Scarlet Raptors' three-game losing streak in the NJAC series, dating back to their last point against Paterson in a 2-2 tie in 2011. The Pioneers lead the all-time series, 8-4-4.
On a hot day at the Rutgers-Camden Community Park pitch, the teams went 110 minutes, with the Scarlet Raptors holding a 14-11 edge in shots and the Pioneers holding an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Paterson didn't waste any time jumping into the lead. Early in the game, sophomore
Rachel Rivell (Mickleton, NJ/Kingsway Regional) sent a long ball up the middle of the field. Junior
Sidney Gabrich (Washington, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) ran onto the ball on a breakaway and sent a shot past Raptor sophomore keeper
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) at 3:40. It was the Pioneers' first shot of the day and the first goal of the season for Gabrich.
Rutgers-Camden didn't get the equalizer until 61:54, when Celona's shot from the left side was blocked in front and fell to the feet of Torres in the box on the far side of the net. She finished off her first goal of the season and first since transferring to Rutgers-Camden this season. It also was Celona's first assist in her two-year Raptor career.
In the second overtime, Rutgers-Camden collected all three of the shots, with Paterson keeper
Kat Clint (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) making a pair of saves, including a one-on-one with Raptor junior forward
Catherine Fiore (Collingswood, NJ/Paul VI). Fiore also barely missed the right post midway through the second overtime, while Clint also saved a shot by Raptor junior
Sarah Boucot (Sicklerville, NJ/Paul VI). Gurba finished with seven saves as she hiked her season record to 2-1-1. Clint had four saves for the Pioneers.
William Paterson returns to NJAC action next Saturday, Sept. 26, when it entertains Ramapo College at 12 p.m.
Rutgers-Camden is idle until Sept. 30, when it plays a 7 p.m. NJAC game at Rowan University.
