Connor Hurff (Sewell, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) has had quite a start to his senior season, and the Scarlet Raptors' midfielder added to his accomplishments here Saturday at the Elmer Lord Soccer Classic.
Hurff notched the game-winning goal on a penalty kick 3:48 into the first overtime period to lift the Scarlet Raptors over St. Mary's College of Maryland, 2-1.
Rutgers-Camden improves to 2-0, while St. Mary's falls to 1-1. The victory raised Head Coach
Tim Oswald's record at Rutgers-Camden to 140-47-23 in his 10th season.
The Scarlet Raptors were awarded their decisive penalty kick when Seahawk sophomore goalie
Zach Haussler (Woodbine, MD/Gleneig) wiped out a Rutgers-Camden player driving toward an open goal. Haussler was red-carded on the play and Hurff buried his penalty kick in the right side of the net past substitute keeper
Ben Meyers (Kensington, MD/Walter Johnson). The goal was the third of the season for Hurff, who had two goals and a program record-tying four assists in Tuesday night's 9-0 season-opening win over Rosemont College. Earlier in the game, Hurff picked up his fifth assist of the season, feeding senior forward
Mike Ryan (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) for a goal at 16:27. It was Ryan's team-leading fourth goal of the season and increased his program career record to 61 goals.
St. Mary's knotted the score midway through the second half on a tally by junior midfielder
Nick Tait (Silver Spring, ND/Sandy Spring Friends School). He volleyed in his third goal of the season, off a rebound, at 66:23.
Freshman
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) went all the way in goal for the Scarlet Raptors to earn the second win of his young career. He had eight saves. Haussler had three saves before Meyers faced the winning penalty shot.
Rutgers-Camden out-shot St. Mary's, 18-15, but the Seahawks held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Earlier in the day, host Salisbury University defeated the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 2-1.
In Sunday's action, Merchant Marine and St. Mary's will play at 1 p.m., followed by Salisbury and Rutgers-Camden at 3 p.m. Both the Sea Gulls and the Scarlet Raptors received votes toward the Top 25 in the pre-season NSCAA Division III poll.
