Cane leads Stockton men over Rutgers-Camden

CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 3, 2016) – Senior guard Armin Cane (Pleasantville, NJ/Pleasantville) scored a game-high 21 points in 24 minutes of playing time and the Stockton University men's basketball team placed nine players in the scoring column as it defeated Rutgers University-Camden, 71-50, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
 
Stockton improves to 16-5 overall and 11-3 in the NJAC with its seventh straight victory. Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-18 overall and 1-13 in the conference with its 12th straight loss.
 
Stockton has won 16 straight games against the Scarlet Raptors and 62 of the last 63 games in the series. It holds a 70-8 all-time lead.
 
Stockton, which never trailed and was only tied at 4-4, used an 11-point run to break that tie and take the lead for good, with Cane tallying four points in that run. The Scarlet Raptors came back from that 15-4 deficit to cut the gap to 20-19 with 5:24 remaining in the first half on a layup by senior guard/forward John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech), but Stockton scored the next six points on the way to a 35-25 halftime lead.
 
The Ospreys led by as many as 30 points (71-41) in the second half before Rutgers-Camden scored the final nine points to cut the margin to 21.
 
In addition to Cane, junior forward Jaymere Hadden (Millville, NJ/Millville) notched 12 points and sophomore forward Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Township) added 10. Harmon also blocked three shots.
 
The Ospreys shot 26-for-63 (41.3 percent) from the field, including 11-for-27 (40.7) from three-point range. Cane went 5-for-6 from beyond the arc.
 
Rutgers-Camden received 11 points from freshman guard Elijah Robles (Clifton, NJ/Clifton), while Tatem nearly had a double-double, collecting nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Junior guard Julian Diaz-Smitherman (Pennsauken, NJ/Pennsauken) added eight points and a game-high four assists for Rutgers-Camden.
 
Both teams return to NJAC action with 1 p.m. games Saturday. Rutgers-Camden visits Montclair State University, while Stockton hosts Ramapo College.
