Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) pitched a five-hit shutout as the Rutgers University-Camden softball team swept Penn State-Abington, 3-2 and 12-0, in a non-conference doubleheader here Thursday. The second game was called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
While Raptor pitchers were shutting down the Nittany Lions' attack, Rutgers-Camden slugged 23 hits, including four apiece by junior leftfielder

After playing their first 14 games on the road, the Scarlet Raptors finally play their home opener Tuesday when they entertain Centenary College in a 3 p.m. doubleheader.

Scott hurled a three-hitter, walking three and striking out 10 as she raised her record to 6-3. She allowed just one earned run in pitching the 63rd complete game of her career.
Rutgers-Camden grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a bunt single by Garcia. She stole second and scored on a single by Scott.
The Raptors added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth following a leadoff bunt single by Goodspeed. Garcia sacrificed her to second and, one out later, she scored when Scott went all the way to third base on an infield throwing error. Scott scored on a single by freshman third baseman
Charlee Greco (Shamong, NJ/Seneca). The Nittany Lions bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, aided by an RBI triple from sophomore centerfielder

Penn State-Abington got the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the seventh on a one-out walk and a sacrifice, but Scott nailed down the win with a swinging strikeout.
Scott, Merryman and Nichols had two hits apiece for the Scarlet Raptors.

Rutgers-Camden scored all the runs it needed in a four-run first inning, sparked by a leadoff single and stolen base from Garcia. Scott singled her home and, after senior centerfielder
Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest) drew a two-out walk, both Scott and Day scored on an outfield error on a ball hit by senior shortstop
Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran). A double by Merryman plated Larson.
The Scarlet Raptors added a run in the second, sparked by a leadoff bunt single from Goodspeed, who advanced on a single by Garcia and scored on a Nichols double. Rutgers-Camden broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning, sparked by Goodspeed's leadoff triple. She capped the rally with a two-run single in an inning that featured six hits, a walk and two hit batsmen.
Garcia and Goodspeed had three hits apiece in the game, while Nichols added two.
Merryman, a first-year Scarlet Raptor after transferring from Georgian Court University, walked two and struck out six in pitching her second shutout at Rutgers-Camden. She raised her record to 3-2.
