LA PLUME, Penn. (April 19, 2016) – It took a while for the Rutgers University-Camden offense to start clicking against Keystone College here Tuesday, but while the Scarlet Raptors were waiting for their runs to come, senior Chris Scarlett (Galloway, NJ/Holy Spirit) was keeping his team in the game by shutting down the nationally-ranked Giants.

Rutgers-Camden finally woke up offensively, scoring six runs over the last four innings, and the Scarlet Raptors went on to defeat the Giants, 6-3, in a non-conference game at Christy Mathewson Field.

Chris Scarlett...six IP, raises record to 2-1
The Giants, named for their Hall of Fame New York Giants alumnus Mathewson, are ranked No. 17 in the American Baseball Coaches Association Division III poll and received 17 votes in the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll, both released Tuesday. They saw their record drop to  20-6, snapping their five-game winning streak.

Rutgers-Camden, which has won seven out of its last eight games, improves to 18-9. The Raptors, who received 14 votes toward the latest ABCA Division III poll and nine votes toward the D3baseball.com Top 25 poll, have now posted a 9-4 record against teams appearing in one, or both, of the national polls.

Scarlett (2-1) hurled three-hit ball over his six-inning start, allowing only an unearned run in the third inning. He walked two and struck out 10. He combined with three other pitchers on a six-hitter, with senior Kyle Gaff (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester City) picking up his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning. It was the 15th save of his career, extending his own program record.

Trailing, 1-0, the Raptors tied the game with a run in the sixth, following a leadoff double by freshman shortstop Chris Jones (Sewell, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep). He was sacrificed to third by senior second baseman Brett Tenuto (Audubon, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and scored on a two-out single by junior rightfielder Doug Carter Jr. (Union, NJ/Union).

The Raptors took the lead for good with a seventh-inning run, sparked by a leadoff walk from junior first baseman Frank Cerami IV (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley). Junior Zach Ellin (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) was inserted as a pinch-runner and was sacrificed to second by freshman third baseman Ray Taylor (Collingswood, NJ/Collingswood). He scored on a single by junior leftfielder Joe Brooks (Blackwood, NJ/Gloucester Catholic).

Both teams scored twice in the eighth inning, with the Raptors' rally sparked by junior designated hitter Andujar Cedeno (Bronx, NY/Escuela Nueva Esperanza, DR), who hit a leadoff single. Carter sacrificed junior pinch-runner Justin Geri (Vineland, NJ/Buena Regional) to second, and he scored on a single by junior catcher Jon Theckston (Gloucester City, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). A walk by Ellin and a single by Taylor loaded the bases before a walk to junior centerfielder Cory Kreamer (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) forced home a run.

The Raptors completed their scoring with a two-run ninth, which started when Jones reached on a two-base infield throwing error. He scored on a two-out double by Carter, who came home on a single by Theckston.

Jones, Carter and Theckston had two hits apiece in the Raptors' 11-hit attack. Theckston and Carter both had two RBIs, while Jones scored twice. Tenuto went 1-for-2 with two sacrifices, while Kreamer was 1-for-3 with three walks.

The Scarlet Raptors' tough schedule continues later this week. The Raptors have a home-and-home New Jersey Athletic Conference series against The College of New Jersey, which is ranked No. 12 in the ABCA poll and No. 15 in the D3baseball.com poll.
