CAMDEN, N.J. (April 20, 2016) – A year ago, the Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis team posted a 2-9 record, but the 2016 version doubled that victory output after posting a 5-4 victory over Berkeley College in a non-conference match here Wednesday.
Rutgers-Camden, which has won two consecutive matches, evens its record at 4-4 with a pair of significant victories under first-year Head Coach
Casey McCullough. In their last win on Saturday, the Scarlet Raptors blanked Albertus Magnus College for the first Great Northeast Athletic Conference win in program history.
Berkeley College falls to 1-5 after losing its second match in two days.
Rutgers-Camden claimed singles wins at the third, fourth and fifth spots. Juniors
Ryan Christopher (Washington Township, NJ/Washington Township) and
Jason Lin (Shirley, NY/William Floyd) both won their matches 6-0, 6-0 at third and fifth singles, respectively. At fourth singles, senior
Onkar Singh (Sicklerville, NJ/Timber Creek) posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory.
At first singles, junior
Anthony Gendin (Voorhees, NJ/Eastern Regional) played a tough match before falling, 6-1, 7-5, to Berkeley all-conference player
Victor Marotta (Miami, FL/Christopher Columbus).
Rutgers-Camden received wins at second doubles from Gendin and Christopher, by an 8-2 score, and at third doubles from the combination of Singh and sophomore
Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), who won 8-6.
Junior
David Celeste (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg), playing in his first collegiate match since joining the team, dropped a hard-fought 6-4, 6-3 decision at sixth singles.
The Scarlet Raptors return to GNAC action on Saturday when they travel to Ramapo College to face the three-time defending conference champions at 1 p.m.
