Seventh-inning lightning sparks Raptors to amazing twinbill split

Charlee Greco...first career home run and game-tying three-run double
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 21, 2016) – The beauty of a game without a clock means that there is always time to mount a rally, no matter how long the odds might seem.

The Rutgers University-Camden softball team used a never-say-die attitude to ensure Arcadia University never registered a 21st out in the second game of a non-conference doubleheader here Thursday. As a result, the Scarlet Raptors rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to post a 7-6 victory, earning a split of the twinbill. Arcadia captured the opening game, 1-0.

The miracle comeback capped a doubleheader which also featured a pair of personal milestones for senior Brittany Scott (Buena, NJ/Buena Regional). Scott, in her third year at Rutgers-Camden after starting her collegiate career at the University of New Haven, collected her 100th Scarlet Raptor hit in the opening game. The memorable second game was the 100th contest of her Rutgers-Camden career. She owns 101 hits and a .331 career batting average in those 100 games.

The split leaves Rutgers-Camden with a 15-15 record, while Arcadia stands at 18-16.

Both teams return to conference play on Saturday. Arcadia hosts Lebanon Valley College in a 4 p.m. Middle Atlantic Conference doubleheader. Rutgers-Camden entertains William Paterson University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference twinbill, starting at 5 p.m.

Brittany Scott...100th Raptor hit in the opener,
100th Raptor game in the nightcap
The first game was a sensational pitchers' duel between Scott and Arcadia senior Erin Wilson (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty). Scott (11-11) allowed only five hits and one walk, while striking out six, but Wilson made the Knights' second-inning run stand up with a four-hit shutout. Wilson (8-6) also walked one and struck out six.

The game's lone run came after freshman shortstop Kristin Cancelliere (Rocky Hill, CT/East Catholic) drew a leadoff walk in the second inning and stole second. She went to third on a single by sophomore designated player Tori Zaccaria (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick) and scored on the back end of an attempted double steal when Zaccaria was thrown out at second.

The Raptors came close to scoring three times, including the bottom of the third when junior designated player Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) had a two-out bunt single. Scott followed with her 100th career hit, but her shot to left field bounded over the fence for a ground rule double, stopping Garcia at third. Wilson worked out of the jam on a comebacker to the mound.

In the fourth, a single by senior third baseman/shortstop Katie Larson (Delran, NJ/Delran) and an error on a fielder's choice put the first two Raptors on base. After a sacrifice by senior centerfielder Lindsay Day (Mays Landing, NJ/Oakcrest), freshman catcher Mackenzie Mason (Penns Grove, NJ/Penns Grove) hit a bullet that appeared ticketed for right-center, but her line drive was hauled in on a fine catch by Arcadia second baseman Nichole Iasiello (Bethlehem, NJ/Liberty). Wilson worked out of the inning with a grounder to short.

Wilson retired 20 of her 21 outs on strikeout or plays in the infield. The lone outfield putout nearly was a game-tying home run by freshman Charlee Greco (Shamong, NJ/Seneca), who sent a deep fly out to right-center in the sixth inning.

Scott went 2-for-3 to account for half of the Scarlet Raptors' hits.

Abby Merryman...won her own game with RBI single
Trailing by three runs and down to their last three outs, the Scarlet Raptors used some grit and good fortune to score four unearned runs off tough-luck freshman losing pitcher Kayla Resh (York, PA/Central York). With two outs and nobody on base, Garcia kept the Raptors alive by slapping an opposite-field single over the Knights' third baseman. Scott followed with a grounder to shortstop, but a backhanded attempt was slightly bobbled and the rushed throw pulled Arcadia's first baseman off the bag. The original out call was appealed to the home plate umpire, who confirmed the first baseman was barely off the bag, keeping the Raptors' hopes alive.

Once again Rutgers-Camden caught a break when Larson struck out on a pitch near the dirt, which scooted past Arcadia's catcher as Larson raced successfully to first base, loading the bases. After two gifts, the Scarlet Raptors made their own breaks when Greco crushed a bases-clearing double to the right-center field wall, tying the game. Day followed with a walk to bring up Raptor junior pitcher Abby Merryman (Washington Township, NJ/Gloucester Catholic). Merryman pulled a shot over the Knights' first baseman for a game-winning single to right, plating Greco.

Katie Larson...two-run home run
The big frame helped Merryman even her record at 4-4. She allowed 12 hits and six earned runs in her complete game, but didn't walk a batter while striking out seven. Resh (3-6), meanwhile, worked 6.2 innings in her complete game, allowing seven hits, two walks and seven runs, only three of them earned. She struck out five.

Rutgers-Camden jumped on the board in the bottom of the first, with Scott walking and Larson following with a home run to left field. It was her third homer of the year.

Arcadia answered in the second with an RBI single by senior centerfielder Sara Boyadjis (Cedar Knolls, NJ/Whippany Park). The Knights added three more runs in the third on five hits, and tacked on two in the fourth on a two-run single by Iasiello.

Rutgers-Camden's third run of the game came on the first career home run by Greco, a one-out shot to left field in the third inning. Greco, who had the game-tying double in the seventh, finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs, four RBIs and six total bases.

Garcia also had two hits in the game for the Scarlet Raptors.

Sophomore third baseman Amanda Hess (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine Heights Area) led the Knights' 12-hit attack with a 3-for-4 game.
