Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) tied the program's career record with her 10th shutout as the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team edged Widener University, 1-0, here Saturday for its first win of the season.
The result leaves both the Scarlet Raptors and the Pride with 1-1 records.
Widener, which opened its season with a 4-3 win over Eastern University, Thursday, held a 9-2 advantage in shots during the first half of the game, but a strong defensive effort by the Raptors kept the Pride off the scoreboard. Gurba made four of her five total saves in the opening half.
With the game still scoreless late in the second half, a foul gave the Scarlet Raptors a free kick, and Sande took advantage of the opportunity. She buried a 25-yard shot for the first goal of her two-year Raptor career, and the Rutgers-Camden defense did the rest in posting its first shutout of the year. Gurba finished with five saves as she tied the program's career mark of 10 shutouts, set by Therese Comella (2004-05). She also jumped into fifth place on the career list for shots faced with 298, passing Tracy Stonaker (288 from 2003-04).
For the game, Widener held a 13-6 advantage in shots, but only a 5-4 edge in shots on goal. Both teams had four shots in the second half. The Pride had a 2-1 advantage in corner kicks.
