CAMDEN, New Jersey (Oct. 19, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's volleyball team quickly got back to winning ways here tonight at the Rutgers-Camden Athletic & Fitness Center by defeating the Delaware Valley University Aggies in 3 straight sets. Final scores in the 3-0 sweep were 25-11, 25-20, and 25-14.
The Scarlet Raptors made quick effort to jump on the Aggies' defense, led by early kills and blocks by both junior
Myiah Gatling (Woolwich Township, NJ, Kingsway Regional) and sophomore
Jordan Erskine (Barnegat, NJ, Barnegat).
Gatling led the Scarlet Raptors on the night in kills with 8, while
Erskine and senior
Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, CA, West Adams Prep) contributed 7 each.
Wilkerson and
Gatling strung together a 10-1 point run with their deadly serves, which helped set up kills by freshman
Emma Browning (Columbus, NJ, Northern Burlington) and sophomore
Jamie Mulligan (New Gretna, NJ, Pinelands Regional).
After taking the first set, Rutgers-Camden got out to an early 8-2 lead before the Aggies went on a run to clinch their first lead of the match and extend their lead to 12-10. Sophomore
Natalie DiGiacomo (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) provided a service ace that swung the momentum back in Rutgers-Camden's favor.
DiGiacomo also provided a team-high 12 digs for the Scarlet Raptors' defensive efforts.
Wilkerson contributed 11 digs for Rutgers-Camden.
Sophomore
Caitlynn Marcano (Williamstown, NJ, Williamstown) strung together 4 assists for her teammates that added to Rutgers-Camden's dominant play midway through the second set. She finished with a team-high 17 assists on the night, as freshman
Alyson Lowe (Havertown, PA, Haverford) provided 9.
Rutgers-Camden went down 1-2 early in the third set, before making quick work of their dynamic attack and never giving up their lead, closing out the match for the 3-0 sweep.
The Scarlet Raptors led in all scoring categories on the night, including kills (53-20), aces (15-1), blocks (3-0), assists (31-17), and digs (44-40).
With the win tonight, the Scarlet Raptors move to 14-12 on the season, and Delaware Valley drops to 3-12.
The Scarlet Raptors return to action for their final regular season home matchups this weekend, as they host a tri-match with Penn State Berks and Marywood on Saturday, October 21
st, with matches at 12pm, 2pm, and 4pm. The Scarlet Raptors will honor their only senior and co-captain
Cortnee Wilkerson (Los Angeles, CA, West Adams Prep) on Senior Day prior to their first match versus Penn State Berks at 12pm.
