JERSEY CITY, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2017) – For a good portion of Saturday's New Jersey Athletic Conference game at New Jersey City University, the Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team launched shots on goal, but couldn't finish.
With 17:43 remaining, however, a yellow card outside of the Scarlet Raptors' box set up a free kick for the Gothic Knights and sophomore midfielder
Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) made the Scarlet Raptors pay. Vargas bent an 18-yard shot over the Raptors' five-player defensive wall and into the upper right corner, sparking the Gothic Knights to a 2-1 victory. It was the ninth goal of the season for Vargas.
The win lifts NJCU to 3-8 overall, snapping a four-game losing streak. Rutgers-Camden, which saw its two-game winning streak broken, falls to 5-7. Both teams are 1-4 in the NJAC.
Rutgers-Camden leads the all-time series against NJCU, 13-5, but the Gothic Knights have posted victories the last two years.
The Scarlet Raptors held a 13-7 advantage in shots in the opening half, but it was NJCU that scored the lone goal. Vargas fed
Katherin Merino (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) inside the box and the junior midfielder ripped a laser to the back of the net for her first goal of the season at 23:19.
Rutgers-Camden finally knotted the score at 56:58 when senior forward
Cassidy McSorley (Haddon Township, NJ/Haddon Township), pictured above, collected her second goal of the season on an unassisted shot from just outside the box.
The Scarlet Raptors finished with a 24-15 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalie
Katie Gurba (Westampton, NJ/Holy Cross) finished with eight saves, while NJCU junior
Dominique Jackson (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) had 13 saves.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday when it travels to nationally-ranked Rowan University for a 7 p.m. NJAC game. The Profs are currently ranked No. 19 in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III poll, with the next ranking due to be released on Tuesday.
