Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) powered to a career-high 26 points to lead four Rutgers University-Camden players in double figures as the Scarlet Raptors defeated City College of New York, 85-74, in a non-conference men's basketball game here Monday night.
The Scarlet Raptors improve to 2-7, snapping a five-game losing streak, while the Beavers fall to 0-8.
In a game that featured three ties and 14 lead changes – 12 changes in the first half – Rutgers-Camden held a slim 44-40 advantage at the break after rallying from the Beavers' biggest lead of the night, 23-17. The Scarlet Raptors went on a 9-1 lead to open the second half and take a 53-41 lead, with senior guard
Vincent Anfield Jr. (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) scoring five of those points in the run and Destin adding the other four. Leading 63-57, however, Rutgers-Camden watched CCNY answer with 10 consecutive points to regain the lead, 64-63, on a layup by senior forward
Salvatore Palazzolo (Middle Village, NY/Long Island City) with 9:25 remaining in the game.
Rutgers-Camden scored three of the next four points, all on foul shots by senior guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), to take the lead for good. Taylor's foul shot with 7:10 remaining broke a 65-65 deadlock and sparked the Scarlet Raptors on a 16-point run to their biggest lead of the evening, 81-65. Destin,
pictured above, had 10 points in that run, helping him pass his previous career high of 25 points, accomplished on two occasions against New Jersey City University (Jan. 13, 2016 and Dec. 2, 2017). Destin also added nine rebounds to tie for game-high honors.
Taylor finished with 16 points, seven boards and a game-high eight assists, one shy of his career high. Anfield and junior guard
Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology) both added 12 points. Harris collected six rebounds, while Anfield had five boards and four assists.
The Scarlet Raptors also had a career-high nine points from freshman guard
Terrance Harris (Burlington Township, NJ/Camden Catholic), who gave the team a big lift in the first half with six of those points off the bench.
Terrance Harris shot 3-for-5 from three-point range.
The Beavers were led by sophomore guard
Enesco Hunte (Brooklyn, NY/Transit Tech), who scored 14 points. Junior guard
James White (New York, NY/North Western) and freshman guard
Ian Javier (New York, NY/Collaborative Education) both scored 13 points for CCNY. Freshman forward
Samuel Williams (Elmont, NY/Sewanhaka) added 12 points and tied Destin with a game-high nine boards.
For the game, Rutgers-Camden shot 31-for-65 (47.7 percent) from the floor and CCNY shot 26-for-58 (44.8). The Scarlet Raptors held a 41-29 advantage off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday with a 3 p.m. non-conference home game against Bryn Athyn College. It is the Scarlet Raptors' last game before the holiday break.
