Rahim Washington (Philadelphia, PA/Prep Charter) scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, including a back-breaking layup after a block by senior center
James Flagg (Levittown, PA/Pennsbury) with 24 seconds remaining, to help the Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team outlast Rutgers University-Camden, 73-69, in a non-conference game here Saturday.
The victory was the sixth in the last seven games for the 6-3 Lions. Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-8.
In the back-and-forth contest, Bryn Athyn forged into a 33-26 lead, only to watch Rutgers-Camden score eight of the first nine points in the second half, forging the third of five ties in the game, 34-34. The teams swapped the lead four times after that, with Bryn Athyn taking the lead for good, 68-67, on a foul shot by junior guard/forward
Lamarr Crenshaw (Philadelphia, PA/Paul Robeson) with 1:04 remaining.
Leading, 69-67, Flagg blocked a Raptor layup attempt, sparking a fast break layup that Washington finished, putting the Lions ahead, 71-67, with 24 seconds remaining. Although Rutgers-Camden cut the gap to two points, on a pair of foul shots by junior guard
Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology), Washington's layup with seven seconds remaining sealed the Bryn Athyn win.
Down by seven at the break, Rutgers-Camden's 8-1 run to tie the game was sparked by a three-pointer from freshman guard
Ian McCarthy (Cherry Hill, NJ/Camden Catholic). It included three points from senior guard
Vincent Anfield Jr. (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) and two from junior forward
Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood).
In addition to Washington's huge night, which included 12-for-20 shooting from the floor, the Lions also received 17 points and eight rebounds from Crenshaw. Washington added four assists and three steals, while junior guard
Larry Stevenson III (Charleston, SC/Sigonella) added eight boards and seven points. Crenshaw and Stevenson tied for game-high rebounding honors, as both teams collected 38 boards.
Anfield,
pictured above, notched his Raptor career high of 24 points, while Harris and Destin both added 14. Harris tied Bryn Athyn's Washington with a game-high four assists, while Anfield had a game-high four steals.
The Lions shot 30-for-63 (47.6 percent) from the floor and 10-for-18 (55.6) from the line, while Rutgers-Camden shot 25-for-61 (41.0) from the floor and 11-for-15 (73.3) from the foul line.
Three Scarlet Raptors passed career scoring milestones. Harris, in his first year at Rutgers-Camden after playing two years of junior college ball at Valley Forge Military College and the Community College of Philadelphia, passed the 800-point plateau for his combined career, hiking his total to 807.
Destin, playing in his third year with the Rutgers-Camden program, moved over 700 career points to 719. Senior guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), meanwhile, scored six points to move past 600 for his four-year Raptor career. He now has 601 career points as a Scarlet Raptor.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Dec. 30 with a 4 p.m. non-conference game at Baruch College. The Scarlet Raptors resume New Jersey Athletic Conference play Jan. 3 at Ramapo College and return home Jan. 10, when they host Montclair State University in another NJAC game.
