13 treys spark Baruch men past Rutgers-Camden

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Dec. 30, 2017) – The Baruch College men's basketball team hit nine three-pointers in the first half to take a 20-point halftime lead, led by the hot hand of junior guard William Sixsmith (Plainview, NY/Holy Trinity), and the Bearcats went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 81-65, in a non-conference game here Saturday afternoon.
 
With William Sixsmith shooting 6-for-9 from three-point range in the first half alone, Baruch raced to a 48-28 halftime lead on the way to evening its record at 5-5.
 
Rutgers-Camden fell to 2-9.
 
William Sixsmith notched 18 points in the opening half, while sophomore center Allen Villar (Bronx, NY/All Hallows) added 11 points and five rebounds in the opening 20 minutes. Senior forward Chimaechi Ekekeugbor (Matawan, NJ/Christian Brothers Academy) added four assists and junior guard Jack Sixsmith (Plainview, NY/Holy Trinity) dished off three assists in the opening 20 minutes for Baruch.
 
William Sixsmith had all six of his first-half treys in the opening 11:32 as the Bearcats raced to a 30-18 lead. Baruch never trailed in the game and the Scarlet Raptors made 11 first-half turnovers and 17 overall.
 
William Sixsmith opened the second half with his seventh trey of the game and finished the night shooting 8-for-15 from three-point range on his way to a game-high 26 points. Villar added 13 points, while junior forward Andre Harris (Melville, NY/Walt Whitman) finished with a double-double of 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Ekekeugbor added 10 points for Baruch.
 
Jack Sixsmith had a game-high eight assists for the Bearcats, who shot 28-for-68 overall (41.2 percent) from the floor, including 13-for-27 from three-point range (48.1). Baruch also held a 46-29 advantage off the boards.
 
Rutgers-Camden received 13 points from senior guard Vincent Anfield Jr. (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley), while junior guard Anthony Harris (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Electrical & Technology), pictured above, and junior forward Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) both canned 12 points. Destin, who finished with a team-high seven rebounds, had eight points in the opening half before getting into foul trouble and missing most of the second half.
 
Senior guard Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) added 10 points and a team-high five assists for the Scarlet Raptors. The five assists moved Taylor into 13th place on the program's career list with 158. He had been tied for 14th at 153 with Don Polk (1989-92) and he also passed Jason Richardson, who had 155 from 2010-15.
 
Rutgers-Camden shot 23-for-52 (44.2) overall from the floor, including 7-for-19 (36.8) from three-point range.
 
The Scarlet Raptors resume New Jersey Athletic Conference play Jan. 3 at Ramapo College and return home Jan. 10, when they host Montclair State University in another NJAC game.
