Second-half run helps Stockton race past Scarlet Raptors

CAMDEN, N.J. (Feb. 1, 2017) – The Stockton University men's basketball team went on a 17-point second-half run, breaking open a tie game, and went on to defeat Rutgers University-Camden, 73-49, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Wednesday night.
 
Stockton improves to 11-9 overall and 6-8 in the NJAC with its 18th straight victory over the Scarlet Raptors. The Ospreys, who have won 64 of their last 65 games against Rutgers-Camden, lead the all-time series, 72-8.
 
Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-16 overall and 1-13 in the NJAC.
 
Trailing at halftime, 30-28, the Scarlet Raptors tied the game on a layup by sophomore guard Elijah Robles (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) early in the second half. It was their last points for nearly six minutes, as the Ospreys went on a 17-point run, sparked by back-to-back three-pointers from junior forward Marcus Harmon (Whitesboro, NJ/Middle Township). Harmon also added another trey late in the run as he scored all 13 of his points in the second half to lead a balanced Stockton attack.
 
The Ospreys placed 14 players in the scoring column. Junior forward Darius Jerkins (Somers Point, NJ/Mainland) and sophomore guard/forward Brandon Hamilton (Camden, NJ/Paulsboro) scored 10 points apiece to join Harmon in double figures.
 
Stockton shot 28-for-58 (48.3 percent) from the field, including 10-for-24 (41.7) from three-point range. Harmon led the long-range attack, going 3-for-5 from beyond the arc.
 
Rutgers-Camden shot 14-for-45 (31.1) from the field. The Scarlet Raptors' attack was led by freshman guard Keith Washington Jr. (Clementon, NJ/Monsignor Bonner), who notched a game-high 14 points. Junior guard Shafeek Taylor (Philadelphia, PA/Mathematics, Civics and Sciences Charter School) added 11 points and a team-high five rebounds.
 
Rutgers-Camden returns to NJAC action Saturday when it plays a 1 p.m. game at Kean University.
