NEWARK, N.J. (April 15, 2017) – Scoreless innings were the order of the day in the New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader between Rutgers University-Camden and sister school Rutgers University-Newark here Saturday.
 
The only runs scored in the game came in the final at bat for the winning team as the NJAC rivals split a doubleheader. Rutgers-Camden scored four times in the top of the eighth inning to win the opener, 4-0. Newark bounced back to win the nightcap, notching its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a 1-0 victory.
 
The split leads the Scarlet Raptors at 12-16 overall and 4-6 in the NJAC. The Scarlet Raiders are 11-17 and 1-9.
 
Rutgers-Camden collected 14 hits in the doubleheader, including three apiece by senior second baseman Jalene Garcia (Vineland, NJ/Vineland) and junior Gabby Pfeiffer (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley). Junior leftfielder Gabrielle Castellini (Millville, NJ/Wildwood Catholic).
 
Raptor sophomore lefty Jessica Thompson (Pedricktown, NJ/Penns Grove) tossed a pair of complete games, pitching all 14 innings. The only run charged to Thompson was an unearned tally. Thompson's record stands at a deceptive 7-11: the Raptors have been shut out in seven of her losses and have scored only one run in two of her other defeats.
 
The Scarlet Raptors host one of the nation's top teams, No. 5-ranked Rowan University, in a 3 p.m. NJAC doubleheader Tuesday.
   
After seven scoreless innings, the Scarlet Raptors finally broke the ice in the eighth inning to end the pitchers' duel between Thompson and Newark junior Kelly Yusko (Portage, PA/Penn Cambria). After starting with freshman Paige Neilson (Atco, NJ/Hammonton) on second base in the eighth inning under the international tie-breaker rule, Castellini stroked a RBI double down the left field line for the first run of the game. One out later, Thompson was hit by a pitch and Pfeiffer tripled to right center, plating both runners. Garcia's two-out single scored Pfeiffer.
 
Thompson finished with a four-hit eight-inning shutout, walking four and striking out one. Yusko (7-11) allowed 11 hits, one walk and four runs (three earned) in eight innings, fanning four.
 
Pfeiffer led the Raptors' attack, going 3-for-4 with one run and two RBIs. Garcia was 2-for-4 with one RBI.
   
Thompson hurled her 11th complete game of the season in the nightcap, but Rutgers-Camden managed only three hits and no runs off Newark junior Morgan Walizer (Forked River, NJ/Lacey Township). Walizer (4-6) didn't walk a batter and struck out one.
 
Newark's lone run came in the sixth inning when freshman leftfielder Brittany Kalesse (Philadelphia, PA/St. Hubert Catholic) opened the frame with an infield single. She reached third on a ground rule double by Yusko, who was playing third base, and scored on a throwing error on a fielder's choice play at the plate.
 
Thompson finished the second game with a seven-hitter, no walks and one strikeout.
