CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 9, 2017) – The Rowan University men's soccer team showed why it is among the top-ranked Division III teams in the nation as the 17th-ranked Profs raced past Frostburg State University, 7-0, here Sunday to capture the championship of the 17th annual Cialella Soccer Classic, hosted by Rutgers University-Camden.
Rowan (4-1) went 2-0 in the two-day event, including a 2-1 victory Saturday over 21st-ranked Christopher Newport University. The Captains (2-2) bounced back on Sunday to claim second place by blanking Rutgers-Camden, 4-0. The Scarlet Raptors and Frostburg State both finished 0-1-1, with Rutgers-Camden taking third place on goal differential after the two teams tied at 3-3 on Saturday. Rutgers-Camden had a -4 goal differential, while Frostburg State was at -7.
The tournament is named after Dr. Edward Cialella, who served as a student-athlete, coach, educator and athletic director over his 50 years of association with Rutgers-Camden from the mid-60s until his retirement in December, 2002.
As the champion, Rowan placed four players on the all-tournament team, including Offensive MVP
Matt Hendrickson (Sewell, NJ/Clearview Regional), Defensive MVP
Modou Sowe (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) and both
Will Sjaastad (Allentown, NJ/Allentown) and
Shane Doherty (Delran, NJ/Delran).
Finishing second gave the Captains a trio of all-tourney players in
Zach Pedini (Midlothian, VA/James River, Daniel Zeitoun (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) and
Bobby Seifert (Springfield, VA/Lake Braddock).
For Rutgers-Camden (1-3-1), sophomore midfielder
Zach Fox (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) and freshman midfielder
Connor D'Ilio (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) earned a berth on the all-tournament team. Frostburg State (0-3-2) also had a pair of all-tourney players in
Ernie Williams (Brookeville, MD/Sherwood) and
Logan Imbraguglio (Westminster, MD/Westminster).
All four teams return to action this week, with three of them playing Wednesday. Rowan hosts Hood College (6 p.m.), Rutgers-Camden entertains Cabrini College (7 p.m.) and Frostburg State travels to Penn State-Altoona (7 p.m.) on Wednesday. Christopher Newport plays again on Thursday with a 4 p.m. game at Greensboro College.

The high-powered Rowan attack outshot Frostburg State, 27-3, and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Rowan scored three times in the opening half and added four second-half goals.
Kevin Primach (Allentown, NJ/Allentown), Hendrickson and Doherty scored two goals apiece for the Profs, while
Alex Nicol (Caldwell, NJ/James Caldwell) added one. Sjaastad,
Travis Ward (New Egypt, NJ/New Egypt) and
Zack Sakena (Ocean View, NJ/Ocean City) collected one assist apiece.
Kyle Dennis (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) made one save in goal to notch the shutout.
#21 Christopher Newport University 4, Rutgers University-Camden 0
In the second game of the day, Christopher Newport scored a first-half goal by
James Lee (Woodbridge, VA/Hylton) at 38:16 after a turnover in the box, and the Captains added three second-half tallies. Zeitoun made it a 2-0 game at 70:39 and
Jimmy Grace (Ashburn, VA/Briar Woods) notched the final two goals for Christopher Newport, with his first one assisted by Lee.
The Captains outshot Rutgers-Camden, 19-4, while the Scarlet Raptors held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Pedini notched the shutout without needing to make a save.
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) had five saves for Rutgers-Camden.
