Wachira's goal lifts Raptors past NC Wesleyan, 1-0

Junior back Brielle Stoner...one of the many Scarlet Raptors to turn in outstanding performances over the weekend
Box Score

CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 10, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden women's soccer team entered the weekend looking for its first win and facing the prospect of playing two very good non-conference teams on back-to-back days.

The Scarlet Raptors came out of the weekend with a well-deserved lift after posting a 1-0 win over North Carolina Wesleyan College here Sunday. The victory, which came one day after a 2-1 comeback win over Shenandoah University, evened the Scarlet Raptors' record at 2-2, while dropping the Battling Bishops to a deceptive 0-3-1.

For the second day in a row, Rutgers-Camden had to dig deep to overcome first-half adversity. While Shenandoah built a 1-0 halftime lead Saturday before the Raptors rallied, North Carolina Wesleyan easily could have led by multiple goals in a first half that was scoreless. The Battling Bishops outshot the Scarlet Raptors, 12-0, in the opening half and had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Rutgers-Camden also dodged a bullet when North Carolina Wesleyan came within inches of scoring on a shot off the crossbar that very nearly skimmed into the net.

The second half was a different story, however, as the Scarlet Raptors evened up the game, taking a 6-5 edge in shots and a 3-0 advantage in corner kicks over the final 45 minutes. They also forced three second-half saves from NC Wesleyan senior keeper Ashley Major (Manassas, VA/Forest Park), who played the first 68:30 of the game and gave up the lone goal.

Rutgers-Camden's goal came after sophomore midfielder Sarah Zuzulock (National Park, NJ/Gateway Regional) sprung freshman forward Meghan Wachira (Plainsboro, NJ/West Windsor-Plainsboro North) on a breakaway. Wachira's shot from the top of the box, at 50:33, produced her team-leading third goal and her second game-winning tally in two days.

The assist was the third of the season for Zuzulock, leading the team.

Freshman goalie Kyrsten Piper (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional) earned her second collegiate win in as many days and notched her first shutout along the way. She made 10 saves, including eight during a first-half onslaught.

For the game, North Carolina Wesleyan held a 17-6 advantage in shots, with all Raptor shots coming over the final 45 minutes.

Rutgers-Camden returns to action Wednesday. The Scarlet Raptors will host Rosemont College in a 4 p.m. non-conference game.

The Battling Bishops host Bridgewater at 3 p.m. Saturday in their next game, which also will serve as their home opener.
