NEWARK, N.J. (Sept. 16, 2017) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team barely had a chance to settle into its surroundings here Saturday night when the Scarlet Raptors found themselves trailing one of the nation's top-ranked Division III teams.

Carlos Castro (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) scored only 25 seconds into the game and the Scarlet Raiders went on to defeat the Scarlet Raptors, 2-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
Rutgers-Camden falls to 2-4-1 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. Rutgers-Newark, which is ranked No. 6 in this week's
D3soccer.com Top 25 poll and No. 17 in the latest United Soccer Coaches NCAA Div. III poll, improves to 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the NJAC.
The victory was Newark's first in the all-time series since a 1-0 win in Camden on Sept. 15, 2012, snapping a string of eight straight Rutgers-Camden wins. The Scarlet Raptors now lead the all-time series, 32-12-2.
Moments after the game started, junior
Breno Lustosa (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) worked the ball down the right side and crossed to Castro, who hit a one-timer into the lower left corner. It was his first goal of the season.
The Scarlet Raiders added another goal at 19:35 when senior
Chigozie Atubi (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) controlled the ball, took a few touches and sent a 25-yard rocket into the upper left corner. It was his third tally of the year.
Rutgers-Newark held a 15-3 advantage in shots and both teams had four corner kicks.

Andres Medina (Howell, NJ/saint Benedict's Prep) made two saves to earn the shutout, while Scarlet Raptor junior goalie
James Brett (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) had four saves.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Misericordia University in a 7 p.m. non-conference game.
