CAMDEN, N.J. (Sept. 16, 2017) – Junior Juliana Ceballos (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) scored one goal and assisted on another to power the Rutgers University-Newark women's soccer team over Rutgers University-Camden, 2-0, in the New Jersey Athletic Conference opener for both teams here Saturday afternoon.

The loss snaps the Scarlet Raptors' three-game winning streak, leaving Rutgers-Camden 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the NJAC. Newark has won five straight games and the Scarlet Raiders improve to 6-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The Newark victory snapped Camden's two-game winning streak in head-to-head play, leaving the Scarlet Raptors with a 12-3-3 lead against their sister school in the all-time series.

The Scarlet Raiders had the territorial advantage throughout most of the game, finishing with a 17-5 lead in shots and a 9-3 edge in corner kicks. Rutgers-Newark senior goalie Diana Carvalho (Newark, NJ/East Side), who was the NJAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday, made three saves to earn the shutout. Rutgers-Camden freshman goalie Kyrsten Piper (Franklinville, NJ/Delsea Regional), who was the NJAC Rookie of the Week Monday, notched six saves as the Scarlet Raiders put eight shots on goal.

The only goal the Scarlet Raiders needed came at 15:49 when Ceballos drilled a long shot from the right side high into the opposite side of the net, over the leaping Piper. It was the team-leading fifth goal for Ceballos.

Midway through the second half, Ceballos made her presence felt again, threading a through ball to spring a breakaway by sophomore Samantha Richter (Dumont, NJ/Dumont). Piper charged out of the net in an attempt to break up the play, but Richter was able to control the pass and find the empty net for her first goal of the season.

Rutgers-Camden ends its season-opening seven-game home stand on Wednesday when it hosts national power Johns Hopkins University at 7 p.m. The Blue Jays are currently ranked ninth nationally in the United Soccer Coaches NCAA Div. III poll and fifth in the D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, with the next polls being released Tuesday.
