Anfield haunts former team to lead Raptors past Red Hawks

Box Score

CAMDEN, N.J. (Jan. 10, 2018) –Vincent Anfield Jr. (Mount Holly, NJ/Rancocas Valley) spent last season as a member of the Montclair State University men's basketball program.

The senior guard bedeviled his old team here Wednesday night as a member of the Rutgers University-Camden Scarlet Raptors.

Anfield poured in his Rutgers-Camden career high of 31 points as the Raptors edged the Red Hawks, 72-71, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game. His huge night gave the Scarlet Raptors their first NJAC win of the season, hiking their conference mark to 1-7. They are 3-11 overall after snapping a four-game losing streak.

Montclair State, which had won six straight games, falls to 11-4 overall and 5-3 in NJAC play.

The Raptors' victory was their first over the Red Hawks since a 69-59 win in Camden on Dec. 15, 2012, snapping a nine-game losing streak in the series. Montclair State leads the all-time series, 52-10.

After taking a 34-30 halftime lead, it appeared that Montclair State was about to run away with the game early in the second half, opening up a quick 42-32 lead. Rutgers-Camden, however, went on a 10-1 run, including seven straight points, midway through the half, turning a 44-36 deficit into a 46-45 lead.

From there, the Red Hawks forged back into a 53-48 lead before the Scarlet Raptors' 11-6 run tied the game at 59-59 with 5:34 remaining. That run included five points from senior guard Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), who joined freshmen guards John Herndon (Philadelphia, PA/West Catholic Prep) and Terrance Harris (Burlington Township, NJ/Camden Catholic) in hitting three-pointers during the run.

Three foul shots helped Montclair State regain a 62-59 lead, but a foul shot by Taylor inched the Scarlet Raptors closer, setting the stage for a huge three-pointer from Anfield with 4:08 remaining to give Rutgers-Camden a 63-62 lead. He tacked on a foul shot to make it a four-point play.

Once again, the Red Hawks answered, this time with an 8-4 run to take a 70-67 advantage into the final 2:49 of regulation. A jumper by Taylor cut the gap to 70-69 before Anfield's seventh three-pointer of the night gave the Raptors the lead for good, 72-70. The Red Hawks added one foul shot in the last minute and had two errant three-point attempts inside the last 10 seconds as the Scarlet Raptors prevailed.

Anfield finished with 7-for-8 shooting from three-point range as he came within one trey of tying a single-game program record, shared by three players. His seven treys were the most for the Raptors since Jonathan Baker-Jernigan also hit seven against Kean University on Dec. 5, 2015.

Anfield, pictured above, passed his previous Raptor high of 24 points, set against Bryn Mawr on Dec. 16. He also produced the second straight 30-point game for Rutgers-Camden, following a 32-point performance by junior forward Isaac Destin (Woodlynne, NJ/Collingswood) at Kean University on Saturday.

Taylor finished with 16 points for Rutgers-Camden, while Herndon added 11. Destin led the team with eight rebounds, with Anfield and Taylor adding six apiece. Anfield's six boards set another Raptor career high for the senior guard.

Rutgers-Camden shot 26-for-64 (40.6 percent) from the floor, aided by an 11-for-16 mark from Anfield. Montclair State went 24-for-47 (51.1) and held a huge 44-27 advantage off the boards, but the Red Hawks made 19 turnovers to the Scarlet Raptors' six. Rutgers-Camden also shot 15-for-32 (46.9) from three-point range, to make seven more treys than Montclair State.

The Red Hawks placed three players in double figures offensively, including two with double-doubles. Senior guard Jovanni Chatham (Brooklyn, NY/Christ the King) had 17 points and 10 boards, while junior forward Jordan Roberson (Union, NJ/Union) collected 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

Senior guard Daniel Ramis (Miami, FL/Westwood Christian) added 15 points for the Red Hawks.

Rutgers-Camden plays another home NJAC game on Saturday when it hosts William Paterson University at 3 p.m.
