CAMDEN, N.J. (March 10, 2018) – The Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis saw five players make their NCAA tennis debut here Saturday and one of them, freshman
Matt Deak (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick), picked up his first victory as the Scarlet Raptors dropped their season opener against Moravian College, 8-1.
Deak,
pictured above, earned a 6-1, 4-6, 13-11 win at third singles to account for the lone Scarlet Raptor victory. He also teamed with senior captain
Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) in an 8-0 loss at second doubles. Collette-Nippins, a three-year letterman for the Scarlet Raptors, moved up to first singles this season and dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision against Moravian's
Peter Demyan (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).
At second singles, freshman
Jose Vargas (South Bound Brook, NJ/Bound Brook) dropped a 6-0, 6-2 match, while junior
Vatsal Patel (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) made had a close 6-4, 7-6 (8-6) loss at fourth singles. Patel is the only other Raptor newcomer, besides Collette-Nippins, with collegiate tennis experience, having played two seasons of NJCAA tennis with the Rowan College at Gloucester County program.
Vargas and
Vatsal Patel dropped an 8-0 decision at first doubles.
Senior
Juan Eduardo Perez (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) and junior
Daehan Bong (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) both made their collegiate tennis debut at third doubles, dropping an 8-1 decision. Perez also lost, 6-2, 6-2, at fifth singles and Bong lost, 6-0, 6-2, at sixth singles.
Rutgers-Camden returns to action Saturday, March 17, with a 12 p.m. match at Ursinus College.
