Scheidemann's five-hitter helps Raptors blank No. 3/7 Rowan, 11-0

Box Score

GLASSBORO, N.J. (April 12, 2018) – Every time junior ace Ian Scheidemann (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) takes the mound for the Rutgers University-Camden baseball team, the Scarlet Raptors have a chance to witness something special.

Scheidemann gave his team another treat here Thursday as he tossed a five-hit shutout to blank nationally-ranked Rowan University, 11-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game.

The victory was the 12th in the last 13 games for Rutgers-Camden, which improves to 16-6 overall and a conference-leading 6-1 in the NJAC.

Rowan, ranked No. 3 nationally in the latest ABCB/Collegiate Baseball poll and No. 7 in the D3baseball.com/NCBWA rankings, falls to 19-5 overall and 3-4 in the NJAC.

Scheidemann finished with six strikeouts and no walks as he raised his record to 5-0 and lowered his miniscule ERA to 0.73. He has thrown five straight complete games, including three straight NJAC complete games, two of which have been shutouts and the other that missed a shutout only due to one ninth-inning run. He has allowed only 27 hits in 49 innings this season, while striking out 44 and walking just eight. In NJAC play, he has now worked 27 innings with his three complete games, allowing only 12 hits and one earned run, while fanning 28. Opponents are hitting .153 against him this season.

While Rutgers-Camden is tough enough to beat with Scheidemann on the mound, the Raptors are nearly impossible to eat with him pitching and the way they swung the bats on Thursday. Rutgers-Camden crushed 17 hits, including four for extra bases. Junior second baseman Chris Jones (Washington Township, NJ/Bishop Eustace Prep) clubbed two doubles among his 3-for-5, two-run, three-RBI day. Sophomore left fielder John Tedeschi (Haddonfield, NJ/Haddonfield Memorial) went 2-for-5 with three RBIs, including a triple, and could easily have had two more hits if not for outstanding defensive plays that robbed him in deep center field and at shortstop. Sophomore designated hitter Matt Yanick (Palmyra, NJ/Palmyra) roped a RBI double to join the extra-base hit parade.

The Scarlet Raptors' offensive feast started with the top three batters in the lineup, as freshman centerfielder Billy Eisler (Pennsauken, NJ/Camden Catholic) went 2-for-5 with a HBP and two runs from the leadoff spot, while sophomore catcher Tyler Travis (Berlin, NJ/Eastern Regional) hit behind him and went 3-for-4 with one run scored and two sacrifices. Batting third in the lineup, freshman first baseman R.J. Concepcion (Audubon, NJ/Audubon) went 3-for-4 with two runs, two RBIs and a walk.

Sophomore shortstop Nolan Gerold (Merchantville, NJ/Camden Catholic) continued his hot hitting, going 2-for-3 and adding two sacrifices from the sixth spot in the lineup.

Rutgers-Camden gave Scheidemann all the support he needed in the second inning against Rowan starter Andrew Cartier (2-1). Jones hit a leadoff double, was sacrificed to third by Gerold and scored on a clutch two-out RBI single by Tedeschi.

The Raptors sent nine men to the plate in a four-run, four-hit third inning, with two runs scoring on wild pitches and two being chased home by Jones' second double in as many innings.

Already leading by a 5-0 count, the Scarlet Raptors put the game away in the eighth inning, sending 10 men to the plate, drilling five hits and scoring six times. Concepcion had a two-run single in the inning, Tedeschi tripled home two runs, Yanick had a RBI double and Jones singled home one run.

Defensively, sophomore third baseman Matthew Stoots (Browns Mills, NJ/Pemberton) made an outstanding catch on a pop up down the left field line behind third base, ending the third inning by stranding two Rowan runners. After that frame, Scheidemann allowed only one hit the rest of the way, a two-out double in the seventh inning by right fielder Kyle Golla.

Rowan second baseman Alex Kokas had a pair of singles for the only Prof to get multiple hits in the game.

The two teams play again Friday in Camden with a 3:30 p.m. start.
