MAHWAH, N.J. (April 21, 2018) – The Ramapo College men's tennis team has been the powerhouse of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference ever since Rutgers-Camden joined the GNAC in the 2015 season.
The Roadrunners continued their winning ways here Saturday as they swept past the Scarlet Raptors, 9-0, to earn another regular-season title in the GNAC South Division with a 3-0 conference record. Ramapo improved to 9-5 overall and will be the top seed in the GNAC South playoffs again, hosting South Division runner-up Rutgers-Newark next Saturday in a conference semifinal match.
The results marked the fifth time the Roadrunners have swept the Scarlet Raptors since the teams started playing during the 2015 season. They played twice in 2016, including once in the GNAC semifinals.
Rutgers-Camden fell to 2-7 overall and 1-2 in the GNAC.
Junior
Vatsal Patel (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) and freshman
Jose Vargas (South Bound Brook, NJ/Bound Brook) were the only Rutgers-Camden doubles team to avoid a shutout, losing 8-3 in the first spot. Senior captain
Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) and freshman
Matt Deak (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) dropped an 8-0 decision at second doubles and senior
Juan Eduardo Perez (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) and junior
Daehan Bong (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) combined at third doubles, losing another 8-0 match.
Patel,
pictured above, was the most successful of the Scarlet Raptors' players in singles, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 match in the fourth flight. Collette-Nippins lost, 6-0, 6-0, at the No. 1 spot and Vargas was defeated, 6-0, 6-1 at second singles. Deak lost a 6-1, 6-0 decision at third singles, Perez was defeated 6-0, 6-1 in the fifth position and Bong dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match at sixth singles.
The Scarlet Raptors close their season Sunday with a 10 a.m. non-conference match at the College of Staten Island.
