Raptors' tennis season ends with 9-0 loss at Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (April 22, 2018) – The final weekend of the Rutgers University-Camden men's tennis season turned out to be a tough one for the Scarlet Raptors.
 
The College of Staten Island swept Rutgers-Camden, 9-0, in a non-conference match here Sunday as the Scarlet Raptors closed their season with a 2-8 record. The loss came one day after the Raptors ended their Great Northeast Athletic Conference schedule with a 9-0 loss at Ramapo College.
 
Staten Island (8-4) swept all three doubles competitions and all six singles matches. The Raptors dropped an 8-0 decision at first doubles with the team of junior Vatsal Patel (Runnemede, NJ/Triton Regional) and freshman Jose Vargas (South Bound Brook, NJ/Bound Brook). Senior captain Jake Collette-Nippins (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling), concluding his four-year Raptor career, teamed with freshman Matt Deak (South Brunswick, NJ/South Brunswick) in a narrow 8-6 loss at second singles, while sophomore Parth Patel (Camden, NJ/Anandalaya, India) and senior Juan Eduardo Perez (Bridgeton, NJ/Bridgeton) were defeated at third singles, 8-1.
 
Collette-Nippins, pictured above, lost at first singles, 6-1, 6-2, and Vargas dropped a 6-0, 6-1 match at second singles. Deak was defeated, 6-1, 6-0, at third singles and Vatsal Patel was swept, 6-0, 6-0, at the fourth flight. Perez lost, 6-1, 6-1, at fifth singles and junior Daehan Bong (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill East) was defeated at sixth singles, 6-0, 6-0.
 
Deak and Vatsal Patel closed the season with the Scarlet Raptors' best singles marks at 4-6 apiece. Deak went 0-1 at second singles and 4-5 in the third flight, while Patel was 1-5 at fourth singles and 3-1 in the fifth spot.
 
Collette-Nippins, the only Scarlet Raptor on the team with multiple Rutgers-Camden tennis letters, finished his four-year career with a 13-26 record in singles play and a 16-25 mark in doubles competition.
