Raptors earn NJAC softball split with Stockton

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 16, 2019) – Rutgers University-Camden sophomore Sarah Byrnes threw a four-hitter to win a pitchers' duel in in the opening game and Stockton University scored six unearned runs in the second inning of the nightcap as the two teams split a New Jersey Athletic Conference softball doubleheader here Tuesday.

The first-game victory snapped the Scarlet Raptors' 12-game losing streak and the split left Rutgers-Camden with a 7-17 record overall and a 3-9 mark in the NJAC.

Stockton is 18-14 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

The Scarlet Raptors return to action Wednesday when they host Catholic University of America in a 3 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.

Rutgers-Camden 2, Stockton 1

Byrnes was outstanding as she out-dueled Stockton senior Victoria Torp to raise her record to 5-11. Byrnes allowed only four hits, with a solo home run by senior third baseman Casey Schieda spoiling her shutout bid in the sixth inning. Byrnes didn't walk a batter and struck out six.

Rutgers-Camden scored the only runs it needed in the first inning off Torp, who allowed five hits, two walks and only one earned run. She struck out two.

The Scarlet Raptors opened the bottom of the first inning with an infield single by freshman left fielder Kimmy Musarra. After a sacrifice by sophomore catcher Alexis Davis, Raptor sophomore shortstop Nina Arroyo reached on an error that chased Musarra to third. Arroyo and Musarra followed with a double steal, with Musarra swiping home. Byrnes blooped a single into shallow left field, just over the shortstop and junior first baseman Marissa Beebe sacrificed runners to second and third. Arroyo scored moments later on a single to center by senior designated player Kendra Pfister.

Besides Schieda's home run, Stockton only put one other runner as far as second base in the game off Byrnes, who retired the first 11 batters. Schieda broke up her perfect game with a two-out single to right in the fourth inning and moved up to second on a single by first baseman Alexandra Cosenzo before Byrnes worked out of the frame with a pop up.

Schieda was the lone hitter in the game with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.

Stockton 7, Rutgers-Camden 4

Torp pitched another complete game in the nightcap for the Ospreys, scattering 10 hits and three walks, while striking out one. She allowed only one earned run as she raised her record to 6-7, aided by plenty of help from the Rutgers-Camden defense.

Rutgers-Camden made five errors in a six-run second inning for the Ospreys, which also included a two-run double from second baseman Morgan DiVello and RBI doubles by Schieda and shortstop Lilly James. All six runs off Pfister were unearned as she dropped to 2-5, allowing four hits in one-plus inning of work.

Rutgers-Camden got two runs back in the fourth inning on a single by Arroyo, a RBI double by Beebe and an infield single by junior shortstop Rachel Edwards. Beebe scored an unearned run on the play when the ball was thrown away.

The Raptors added a pair of unearned runs in the fifth after Musarra reached on an error and Davis walked. Arroyo poked a RBI single. Following a pair of outs, including one on the bases, Beebe doubled and Pfister singled home Arroyo.

Arroyo had a fine game, going 3-for-3 and also reaching as a hit batsman. She went 4-for-6 with three runs and one RBI in the doubleheader.

Beebe, Pfister and Edwards added two hits apiece in the second game to fuel Rutgers-Camden's 10-hit attack. Stockton managed only five hits off the combination of Pfister and Byrnes, with Schieda collecting two of them to finish the doubleheader 4-for-6 with three runs and two RBIs.
