Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Walton sets ground ball record in Raptors' loss to Rowan

CAMDEN, N.J. (April 23, 2019) – The Rowan University lacrosse team scored a goal 24 seconds into its New Jersey Athletic Conference game here Tuesday and notched the first 10 goals of the game on the way to a 20-2 victory over Rutgers University-Camden.

The Profs, who have won five of their last six games, improve to 10-5 overall and 5-1 in the NJAC. They are 10-0 in their all-tie series against the Scarlet Raptors.

Rutgers-Camden falls to 4-10 overall and 0-5 in the NJAC with its seventh straight loss.

Senior Mikala Gillespie scored an unassisted goal 24 seconds into the game and 24 seconds later, her fellow senior Maddie Bray tacked on Rowan's second goal.

By the time the Profs finished their opening run of 10 goals, Bray had scored five times, while senior Taylor Gretz had two goals and one assist.

Rutgers-Camden scored its first goal with 10:48 remaining in the half when senior midfielder Cara Racobaldo found the net, assisted by sophomore attack Demi Albertini. Racobaldo scored an unassisted goal midway through the second half for the Raptors' other tally. The two goals give her 27 for the season, while Albertini's assist was her seventh.

Rowan finished with 30 shots, 28 of them on goal, as Raptor sophomore keeper Brittany Watson made eight saves. The 30 shots faced moved Watson into second place on the program's career list with 877 shots faced, passing the mark of 851 by Alexa Rocks (2015-16). Watson also became the single-season goalie leader for shots faced with 474, passing the mark of 460 by Rocks in 2016, and extended her own single-season record to 151 saves.

Rutgers-Camden junior defender Kacie Walton and freshman midfielder Claire Gailliout both had three ground balls to lead the team. For Walton, the three ground balls allowed her to set a new single-season record with 53. Walton, pictured above, passed the mark of 51 set by Megan Everett in 2017. It also allowed her to tie for second place on the career list with 121 ground balls, a mark she now shares with Holly Cusick (2013-16).

Freshman defender Claire McKernan led the Scarlet Raptors with two caused turnovers, while Racobaldo and freshman midfielder Jazmin Torres shared the team lead with three draw controls apiece. Torres raised her team-leading total to 68 draw controls, three shy of Dorothy Westlake's single-season program mark set in 2014.

The Scarlet Raptors close their season Saturday with a 1 p.m. NJAC game at Ramapo College.
