CAMDEN, N.J. (May 21, 2019) – Over the years, Rutgers University-Camden Men's Assistant Soccer Coach
Don Norton, Jr. has written numerous articles for a variety of publications, from regional ones such as
Soccer New England to national magazines like the United Soccer Coaches'
USC Soccer Journal.
Norton has been published again after penning an interview with Mike Barr, the Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association Technical Director, in the May/June 2019 issue of the
USC Soccer Journal.
Norton saw another one of his articles published in the March/April 2019 issue of the
USC Soccer Journal after penning a piece entitled "Coaching in the Game: Individual and Team Tactical Decisions." That piece comes on the heels of four articles the
USC Soccer Journal published by Norton in 2018. He has written 21 articles for the publication since 2011, when it was known as the
NSCAA Journal.
Norton also has written for the
Southern Soccer Scene, Success in Soccer, Soccer America and
Soccer New England, penning a total of 29 articles, including his 21 with the
NSCAA Journal/USC Soccer Journal. His first article, "Coaching A Youth Soccer Team When The Match Begins," appeared in the February, 2004 issue of
Southern Soccer Scene.
Norton, who will begin his seventh season as an assistant coach at Rutgers-Camden in the fall, has over 20 years of experience coaching collegiate soccer. He also has coached at Haverford College, Swarthmore College, Richard Stockton College (now Stockton University), Rowan University and the University of Pennsylvania. He has coached numerous All-Conference, All-Region and All-American players and NSCAA academic award-winning teams.
Norton also has a part-time job as a youth talent scout for the Philadelphia Union, a team that currently shares first place in Major League Soccer's Eastern Conference.
During Norton's first season with Rutgers-Camden, the Scarlet Raptors won the New Jersey Athletic Conference title and reached the NCAA Division III national championship game for the first time ever. They were a 2014 NJAC finalist and went on to win the ECAC Metro/Upstate championship that season. The 2015 Scarlet Raptors won another NJAC title and advanced to the NCAA tourney, while the 2016 and 2018 teams participated in the ECAC tournament.
Norton is a state national coaching school instructor for New Jersey Youth Soccer, Eastern Pennsylvania Youth Soccer Association and an NSCAA associate national staff coach. He has taught the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) national D, E and F license courses for over 20 years to thousands of professional, college, junior college, high school, club and youth coaches from across the region and country.
Norton served as a Region 1 ODP boys support staff coach at Rider University from 2012-14, working with leading college coaches, club coaches, and state Directors of Coaching to identity elite players from across the region for selection to the Region 1 teams. Players from Region 1 then compete against the other three regions for selection to US national teams.
A boys' staff coach for Mt. Laurel United Soccer, Norton was the Director of Coaching for the Highland YSC/NJ Rush Soccer Club from 2009-2018. He was asked by US Youth Soccer Director of Coaching Sam Snow to speak at the 2014 NSCAA/US Youth Soccer National Convention in Philadelphia and spoke for an hour to the national and international audience on methods to implement a curriculum in youth soccer clubs.
In 2003 Norton was asked by the Football Association of Ireland to provide player development strategies used in the United States as part of the F.A. Ireland's Development Strategies 2002-2006: One Game, One Association, an outline to improve playing standards at all levels of Irish football over the next five years.
Norton, who has a BA from Gettysburg College and a MA from Rowan University, also has obtained the second-highest coaching license in the world, earning the prestigious FA Ireland "A" License (UEFA "A" License). He also has the Scottish FA "A" Certificate, USSF "A" License, NSCAA Premier Diploma and USSF National Youth License. While earning his Scottish and Irish badges, his instructors and classmates consisted of many of Europe's leading coaches and players from across Europe, including former Scottish national team head coaches Craig Brown and Craig Levein, former Manchester United head coach David Moyes and Irish senior national team head coach Brian Kerr.
