GLASSBORO, N.J. (August 31, 2019) – One day after the Rutgers University-Camden men's soccer team opened its season with a one-goal victory at the Gilmore Classic, the Scarlet Raptors had a lot more breathing room here Saturday.
Rutgers-Camden exploded for five goals on its way to a 5-1 victory over Mount Saint Vincent to wrap up its trip to the two-day Gilmore Classic, held at Rowan University. In its season opener on Friday, the Raptors posted a 1-0 win over Carthage College.
Rutgers-Camden outshot Mount Saint Vincent, 28-12, on the way to its biggest scoring output since a 7-1 victory at Lancaster Bible College on Oct. 19, 2017.
After starting Friday's opener with a bang on a goal at 9:21 by
Joni Gjyleri, the Raptors had another quick start Saturday. This time, it was senior forward
Cristian Ognibene finding the net at 6:48. He took a low cross into the box from the left side by sophomore back
Michael Funaro. Ognibene finished the play with a tap in.
The Dolphins tied the game at 15:36 on a goal by Sony Konate. Following a throw-in from the left side, Konate dribbled into the box and hit a shot into the left side of the net. The score remained deadlocked at 1-1 for nearly nine minutes before the Raptors took the lead for good on a goal by senior midfielder
Luis Rivadeneira at 24:09.
Freshman midfielder
Franco Burset collected his first collegiate assist with a pass from inside the box, setting up Rivadeneira's shot into the lower right corner.
Grudnik added a goal of his own in the 32nd minute, dribbling to the center of the box before hitting a shot into the lower left corner.
The Raptors kept the pressure on the Dolphins in the second half, with junior forward
Skyler Diggs notching a goal in the 53rd minute. Diggs, the Raptors' leading scorer last season with 21 points (nine goals, three assists), ripped a shot into the left side from just inside the box. Gjyleri closed out the scoring at 71:59, dribbling into the box from the left side and scoring at close range for his second goal in as many days.
In addition to its big advantage in shots, Rutgers-Camden held a 7-1 lead in corner kicks.
Senior goalie
Kyler White made five saves to earn his first win at Rutgers-Camden since transferring to the school. Mount Saint Vincent keeper Padelis Astrinidis had 11 saves.
