READING, Penn. (Sept. 4, 2019) – A long afternoon of missed opportunities, outstanding defensive stands and scoreless minutes came to a sudden end in the first overtime here Wednesday.
Junior forward
Skyler Diggs scored off a one-touch feed from sophomore forward
Joni Gjyleri at 6:40 of the first overtime to lift Rutgers University-Camden over Alvernia University, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer game.
The win lifts the Scarlet Raptors to 3-0, while the Golden Wolves fall to 1-2.
Diggs scored his second goal of the year, and his first game winner, on Gjyleri's first assist of the season. Both players share the Scarlet Raptors' scoring lead with five points (two goals and one assist).
Prior to that goal, both defenses ruled the day in a game where Alvernia held a slim 15-13 edge in shots and both teams had five corner kicks. Both teams collected seven shots on goal.
Scarlet Raptor senior goalie
Kyler White played the final 85:55, making all six Raptor saves, to post the victory. Alvernia's Luca Grippi played the entire game, allowing one goal and making six saves. The Raptors also collected a team save in the opening 10 minutes when junior
Kieran Burns was in goal.
Rutgers-Camden will host its 19th annual Cialella Soccer Classic this weekend, with two games each day at 2 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. On the first day Saturday, Rowan University will face SUNY-Cortland in the opening game and Rutgers-Camden will face the College of Staten Island in the nightcap.
